Thanks for all the replies. I had forgotten to mention some things like Win 2000 and the wheel worked fine in Wildfire 1. Doing a simple "Update Driver" on my mouse worked, (You might want to try that Daryle).
For archive's sake, some other people's solutions to same problem:
A mouse setting for the wheel set to 'auto scroll'.
Mouse in USB port not working, use adaptor into round mouse port.
