STP files

Does anybody know if STP file can have material of the original parts info stored?

Not sure what the spec says,

I did a test of a Step out and Step in and the imported file had no material set.

But material could be an optional piece of the output that PTC does not transmit.

I have a Step file from someone and it has color in the file, but my test file does not.
