Getting Upfront Cost and DFM Visibility

Globally, organizations need to focus on reducing product cost, improving product quality and speeding up the time to market. While many organizations spend money and efforts in improving manufacturing efficiencies, the solution lies in the design stage. More than 80% product cost in design is allocated right at the design stage .Identifying potential manufacturing issues right at the design stage can save a lot of time and effort. Also the cost to correct issues due to manufacturability are higher at a later stage. Therefore, it is imperative that product designs should be validated with each design iteration to ensure cost targets and manufacturability requirements are met right from the initial stages of product development. Design engineers need to go through multiple iterations to understand the cost impact. Designers should be provided with adequate tools to make decisions and trade-offs about product cost. Key elements which influence the decision are cost drivers which should be aided by software and reviews. During the presentation we outlined the importance of early visibility to manufacturability and cost during the design stage and showcase an automated design for excellence solution, integrated within CREO Parametric, which identifies manufacturability issues to evaluate design alternatives and also highlights high cost features along with part ROM cost to ensure reduced cost and optimum manufacturability of the product.
