Are you interested in 3D printers, but convinced they will do nothing for you? Have you been watching from the sidelines waiting to see what happens but not finding information? If so, this presentation will share the benefits and drawbacks of low cost 3D printers and provide an understanding of their effective use. The typical process for product development involves conceptual design on paper, then CAD, then a narrowing of concepts to be prototyped for evaluation. Utilizing a 3D printer can reduce the time it takes to choose direction, improve stakeholder feedback, and allows you to increase the number of concepts initially pursued to improve confidence. While a 3D printer will not replace your favorite prototyping shop, it allows you to send ideas with higher confidence, that are more thought through, and have fewer iterations. Ultimately, if used correctly, 3D printers are an important tool for speeding up the conceptual product development cycle.
