How can designers be sure they are choosing preferred materials from their company’s “gold source”? How can they systematically explore trade-offs between functional performance and material cost and/or environmental implications? How can data be provided automatically for mass property and other calculations – or complex CAE materials models be derived reproducibly from test data, and made available to engineers enterprise-wide? How can a manager look across multiple product models in PLM to determine most effective application of materials? Materials information technology specialists Granta Design have partnered with PTC over several years, delivering Materials Gateway applications first for PTC Creo Parametric, and subsequently also for PTC Windchill – enabling direct access to proprietary “gold source” materials knowledge as well as to Granta’s comprehensive library of off-the-shelf materials data. As companies increasingly seek to link this managed materials knowledge to their product definition process, interoperability between Granta’s materials software, PTC Creo and PTC Windchill is an increasing deployment focus. This presentation reports on the capabilities of the third generation of the Materials Gateway integration software, and illustrates the benefits it provides to the design and simulation communities, and its role in the overall PLM workflow.
