Branch an assembly

Branch an assembly

Is there any way to branch an assembly? For example:

- I have ASM_1 that is regularly updated. I want to create a new ASM_2 that is based off of ASM_1.

- ASM_2 will be identical to ASM_1 except it will have additional features. These additional features should not be in ASM_1.

- ASM_2 will be revisited periodically and ideally it will receive all the updates that ASM_1 gets.

Real world example. We have designed a chair that gets occasional updates. A customer wants our chair with a custom caster. Can we create an assembly for the customer that has the modifications for the caster but in all other ways matches the original chair assembly as it progresses?

Is this type of behavior possible? I hope this the right place to post this, please let me know if I've misplaced this question. Thanks!
