Enable creation of document type only when product uses specific template.

Hi Gurus,

Is it possible to do this?

Problem:

I want to ENABLE the creation of a specific document(soft type) ONLY when the active product context was created using a specific product template.

I mean, users can only create "engineSpecs" document type when the product he is working was created using the "EngineTemplate", otherwise it will not be allowed to create it.

Warm Regards

Hi Guilherme,

It is possible to achieve this goal. Are you using Windchill 9.1 or 10+? In
Windchill 10+, there are more options available.

For 9.1, Context templates allow you to access control policies to be
included in the template. How your current policies are configured will be
the tricky part.

If you have very open ACLs (users have full access to the base WTDocument
type), then you will either need to set deny restrictions on any
non-EngineTemplates for the engineSpecs document type (deny all access to
the engineSpecs soft-type) or configure the permissions to be applied to
the soft-types of WTDocument only, instead of the base type. I would
suggest the latter as deny restrictions make the system more difficult to
manage in the future.

Basically, your ideal set-up would be that all Contexts (can be set at Org
or Site) have access policies applied only to the non-base WTDocument
soft-types. Then, you can configure the EngineTemplate to grant access to
the engineSpec soft-type. This method might take some additional work up
front to reconfigure the WTDocument policies but it will make
administration of the policies easier going forward.

Thank you,
Zack

If I understand your question correctly, you could add the document templates to the product template. This would make the desired document templates available in any new products.

You also mentioned limiting the creation of a specific document subtype in a product based on the template the product was created with. I am not aware of any OOTB feature that will allow you to do that, but I am not an admin or customization expert and I'm curious if there is a customization that would support this.

Do others see value in limiting specific document subtypes/container? I can see how this would greatly simplify the user experience and the selection of a specific document type, not to mention limiting errors in document subtype selection by only allowing applicable subtypes.
