String IBA with drop down list of values

What's you opinion? I have a case for a String value that can be
populated with a drop down list. Simple cases of a discrete set
constraint on the IBA. But what if the values are too large? I think I
am capped at 4000 characters and the interface is horrible for entering
that in. What are some alternatives to using the OOTB discrete set?

Note - If you have multiple languages installed (we have German DE for example), the 4000 character limit is cut to 1/3 of what it otherwise would be.

Thought of that. DUs are my hammer and I have to avoid seeing only
nails. It would require a new UI since its not possible to hook the DU
into the edit Part form without uniquely listing the attribute. I would
be automatically be displayed by All IBA UI.
