Thanks to everyone who provided suggestions. Updating the graphics driver resolved the Pro/E issue of slow response to spinning, panning and zooming in assemblies running 2000i (Pro/rock and chisel) on XP. I now have some other graphics issues, but will look into updating monitor and other device drivers that are out of date.
