Can I make a parametric appearance?

Is it possible to drive surface appearances with parameters? If not is there a workaround to have a surface of a part show different decals depending on which instance of a family table is selected?

Well - no ideas forthcoming from the forum... I made a workaround which is to create a new surface in the location where I want my controlled colour and decal. The desired appearance is applied to the new surface. Additional surfaces are created in the same location, each with its own appearance. Finally a family table is created which includes/excludes surfaces according to the table instance. It would be much neater if there was parametric access to appearance properties imho.
