Cutout

Cutout

Good morning,
I have an assembly that I want to encapsulate. I want my encapsulation
component to have the correct mass properties, volume, etc.
I thought it would be simple, just shrinkwrap the assembly and use the
shrinkwrap to make a cutout in the encapsulation component.
Unfortunately, it's not as simple as that:

A surface shrinkwrap is nice and small and quick, but does not cut anything
out of the encapsulation.

A merged solid shrinkwrap takes 20 minutes to be produced, creates a file
300 times as large as the parent assembly and makes the whole asembly
unusably slow.

I tried a couple of other things:

I tried selecting each component in the assembly (several hundred) using the
search icon and using them to make the cutout. This works, but results in
several hundred individual cutouts in the encapsulation component (or would
have if I had persevered with pressing 'Done' that many times - life is too
short for that one)

I tried solidifying the surfaces in the surface shrinkwrap and using the
resulting lump for the cutout, but, true to form, the surfaces didn't meet
and it couldn't solidify them - I've never had much luck with solidifying
surfaces. It is an awful lot of surfaces, in fairness.

So I am left with one method that works, but yields an unusable model and
several other methods that look promising, but, ultimately, don't seem to
work at all.

Have you any cunning plans?

I would like to crack this, not least because it seems so trivial on the
face of it.

Regards,
