Dimensions won't change. How do I remove the constraint?

In class, students ocassionally draw sketches and then while trying to reset dimensions, find that the dimensions will not change. I am guessing that this is probably due to an automatic constraint that Creo has decided to set.

How can we undo the automatic constraint and enable the dimension to be changed?

Why does Creo set these automatic constraints? is there a way to turn this off?

If the constraints are gray, this is not a strong or locked constraint. Often, a dimension has trouble making a big jump. Sometimes you have to sneak up on the change. And the sketch also must be able to support the change. There are things that tend to flip on your if you make to big a change. Often it is best to simply drag the geometry closer to where you want it, and then lock the dims you know are maintained. When I finish a sketch, I try to make sure nothing is "implied". Dimensions and constraints are either strong or locked.
