Importing STEP files another way.

Importing STEP files another way.

I just thought of another way you can do this once you have the file
imported into an assembly and everything looks right. You can then merge
all the components into the PCB from the assembly creating a single part
with a bunch of merged features which are the components.

I concur.... one more step we do is to export the merged data them
import to break all ties with the original imported database....

Why all this work?

1) To establish pin 1 location and CSYS orientation to match your
company standards. (For us, looking down into the part, pin one is
always on the left. Through hole- center of pin, SM- some physical
feature that can is unchanging- not the center of pad or formed leads.)
2) Simplify the final part- Samtec is a great example of highly detailed
databases that import as an assembly- it's worth it to add a feature or
two to fill up some of the detail before exporting/importing to keep the
component simple.
3) ECAD exporting is somewhat "flakey" when exporting components that
are assemblies rather than single parts.

Have a good weekend!

Also, if the original assembly was exported from PROE and the parts were
of different units, your import will assembly incorrectly. When you
send out STP you have to be careful about the units. It's easy to miss
sometimes if you're using parts from other sources or previous projects.
