SUMMARY: 64bit vs. 32bit - FYI

I received 51 responses to my post.



The results are thus:



Currently Using 32bit OS 2892 users

Currently using 64bit OS 0580 users

Upgrading to 64bit 0814 users

(in 6 mos. or less)



Although I asked for no fluff, I did receive a few comments.



One site had 20 users on 32bit, and one 64bit shared for the group.

Several had two or more shared 64bit dedicated to analysis, rendering, and
master models.



Most of the upgrades were moving from 32bit XP to 64bit XP.

One site was waiting for IT to certify Windows 7.

Several sites expressed a desire to migrate, but couldn't because of funding
issues.



There were several private emails expressing connectivity issues with VPN
and 64bit.

I will again add the Cisco AnyConnect fix our IT people came up with for
Intralink 3.x and Pro-E that I posted back in September of 2008. There are
several other solutions, but this fix addresses only the Cisco/AnyConnect
VPN client.



We currently have all 64bit workstations (including two mobile) with one
legacy 32bit WS for printing to an ancient Xerox plotter.

Other than the issue with that one printer driver and an old Kinsington
trackball, our 64bit implementation works extremely well.

The ability to access memory over 3Gbytes is crucial.

Great post Anthony.

64bit is the future but just like many things in the tech world, we are moving slowly and with caution.

The next wave of computers we are getting will be 64bit running W7. I will be running a test on one box for a while before converting everyone over.
