Step File Export - I'm having a dim day

Good afternoon,
I am exporting an assembly as a step file and I keep getting extraneous bits
coming through in the finished export. I am unsure whether they are surfaces
from a skeleton, or surfaces from an inheritance feature. Be that as it may,
I know I can play tunes on the layer status when I export the assembly, to
make the unwanted bits go away.
However, when I look at the layer dialogue, under the column labelled Export
Status I am offered the choice between 'Ignore' and 'Skip'. For the life of
me, I can't figure out what exactly I am ignoring or skipping - the layer
status as stored - the geometry itself - the Euro exchange rate - I am at a
loss. Neither option seems to make sense. There is another column called
Display Status. This gives me the option between Show and Blank. I assume
that setting does not affect the saved step file, but maybe I'm wrong. What
is it there for, if it doesn't affect the exported file?
The help, as usual, says something along the lines of 'Set these items as
desired', which is as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike.
Can you explain the thinking behind these labels, so that I can make an
informed choice, please?

Thanks,

John

I think I may have found the answer - config.pro option
INTF_OUT_BLANKED_ITEMS no
Seems to help, as long as I set the offending layers to blank in the Display
Status column.
Told you I was being dim...
Still don't understand the terminology, though!

Regards,

John
