Update inheritance set to manual update

Is there a way to quickly update an inheritance that is set manually update?

I have a model that I am using to drive many other models by turning on and off several features.  To prevent regeneration errors in upper level assemblies I have set the inheritance to manual update.  If it is set to automatic update, it will update during regeneration is the base model is in memory.  Also, there is a command, update inheritance in the RMB menu.  The update inheritance command (which sounds like a manual operation) is not available if the inheritance is set to manual update.

I have to edit definition to change it to automatic then edit definition again to change it back to manual.

The only method I have found so far, to speed up the process, is to use a mapkey which requires no deviation in the command flow such as checkout warnings.
