"Substitute" Simplified Reps

I'm thinking about using a "substitute" component in an assembly simplified rep. I tried to do a quick-and-dirty substitute, but I noticed I can only perform a "substitute" if the component is a member of a family table or interchange group.

To be able to use substitute with an interchange assembly, can I set up references that only define the component placement, or do I need to set up references for all the child components too?
