I opened up an existingfile in Arbortext 5.4 and when I tried to Compose a pdf file, the COMPOSE option was greyed out. What do I have to do to create a .pdf?

Did you have the "Print Composer" module installed when you installed
5.4? Even if you are using PE, this component has to be installed to
    perform composition requests.

That will cause it to be greyed out, it still might not work if you don't
have the licensing configured properly as well.

I currently have both 5.3 and 5.4 installed. Do I need to uninstall the 5.3 print composer module before installing the 5.4 print composer or can I have both of them going?

If you are using Adobe Acrobat Distiller and the Arbortext Print Composer feature, you must have the preference "usedistiller" set to "on" as shown in the top line of the following screen shot.. It defaults to "off".

Also, you need to have your Print Composed installed properly.

If you are using Styler and the PTC Direct to PDF I can't help you, except that you must have Styler licensed. The default Styler that comes "free" with the Arbortext distribution doesn't include the Direct PDF feature.

You can have both 5.3 and 5.4 installed on the same system, with or
without Print Compose on either, as long as they are installed in
different locations. You just can't have them both running at the
    same time.

Just to confirm, you are not trying to use a Publishing Engine
instance, right? So, you have a properly-licensed copy of either
Styler or Print Composer? You can check that the licensing is all
correct through the menus in Editor by going to "Help", "About
Arbortext Editor", "Session" and selecting the "Components" tab of the
    resulting dialog.

Even if you have Print Composer installed, you must still set usedistiller=on in order to "un-gray" the Compose-PDF menu selection.

True. A license for just Print Compose still requires Adobe
Distiller. However, a license for the full version of Styler removes
that requirement, as it includes the Direct PDF feature.

And, with AE 5.4 you don't need a Styler license to compose direct to PDF. Just a print composer license.
