Import Framemaker Files in Arbortext

Need to import Framemaker files into arbortext. Would like to know which approach will be suitable. Data received is .fm and .book files of Framemaker.

Accepted Solutions

We have used three approaches for this in the past.

1. Arbortext offers the "Import/Export" product which allows you to convert other file formats into XML. This is able to accept Framemaker MIF files, and you can define processing rules which generate the required XML. No conversion will be 100% accurate so you will still need to QC and correct the resulting files.

2. Framemaker can be configured for "structured" use. If you setup your Structured Application, EDD files, etc. then you will be able to structure the FM files and export to XML that way.

3. Send the files offshore to a conversion vendor who specialises in this type of conversion work. I can supply contacts if you are interested.

We find #1 works well if it is only a small volume of work. #2 works well for continual conversion (eg. monthly updates etc.). #3 works best for large volume conversions.

I am using first approach. I am using mif2docbook template which has converted most of the things to paragraph and was not able to convert the images tags.

Then I think you will need to use the maptemplate editor to fix the MIF2Docbook MapTemplate according to your needs. You should be able to review some log messages or do a bit of investigation of the MIF structures to figure out what went wrong.
