I just ran into this situation myself.
If you call in a problem with a VMware installation, support will indicate
that this is not a tested/supported environment. If the problem is
significant enough, they will request you install and test on a real
machine.
We had to track down some issues with our install. we discovered that even
though while you are in the VM session looking at the memory allotments
and stuff (shows 2G of ram availalbe) that there are other settings on the
VM that can be used to throttle the session. I don't know what the
paramter was but my VM was setup to only allow access to 256k of ram
before paging to disk.
We don't have a high production environment and things seem to be running
ok in the VMware configuration.
