Is it just me?

Is it just me?

Is is just me or has the volume of posts increased exponentially since the new forum was introduced? I think I am receiving a lot of duplicate posts, and they don't seem to be arriving in chronological order - I get replies before the original question.

Between 8pm Monday and 6am this morning, I received 46 posts, and many of them looked familiar. Do I have a setting wrong somewhere?

Regards

Dido!

It seemed very normal for me to receive messages that answer someone's
question(s) before I rec'd the message with the original question. I know
I wasn't the only person who saw this....

I also had (51) messages this morning. That is very unusual and too many.
I haven't went to the web-based forums but I do hope there's a way to turn
off e-mail copies of messages. I'll gladly do the forum only. I think it's
a better system anyway.

One reason I think the volume of posts has increased is that several of
the posts were actually meant to be replies back to the sender only, not
the list. Now, when you simply hit reply, it goes to the list, not the
original sender as it did before.

So, there were several response mistakes I saw, maybe as many as 10+
that were easily identified as ones that were not intended to go back to
the list.

Same thing here.

Dido!

Some quick notes -

  1. The server was hammered yesterday with account sign-up, indexing (for searching) and people changing settings and subscriptions by the 1000s. This lead to some delays in mail sending. Traffic did rise pretty quickly yesterday.
  2. There have been no duplicate emails
  3. You can use it as a web only forum or a listserv. If you log into the portal (portal.ptcuser.org) and go to the file area there is a How-to document for the Forums (there is also a link from www.ptcuser.org)
  4. You can subscribe / unsubscribe and change email settings at will - they all work now on our new service.

This is because all posts are going to the list now. Before the default
was to have them go to the author. And there seems to be a delay on
some responses and not on others. Things come in all out of order and
you get the same answer from many people because they don't know that
another person already answered.

I think it will be a little messy while Jeff and the gang sort through
the bugs, the complaints and the issues. We just need to be patient.

For a first effort, the new exploder is fantastic. And it was delivered
on time! In time it will get better as they make some tweaks to better
serve how we want to use it.

This increase in volume is a happy thing for me. The last several months
I have received very few posts and most of those were replies to posts
and I never got the original post. I have been looking for a problem
here on our e-mail server, but I will assume now that it was the old
exploder and not on our server.

They definitely not arrive in a chronological order.
We are also getting all the replies. I preferred the "old" way when we were only receiving the summaries.

No kidding - my mailbox is full........

I feel that James is correct. Is there anyway to reply to one recipients and
not the whole forum with out cutting and pasting their address in a separate
email?

I feel this would be a question for Jeff Zemsky!

Because all posts now go back to the exploder.. not the individuals and if
you reply to all.. it now goes TWICE to the exploder

I have gotten a number of duplicates.

Please correct the email problem or I'll be forced to send it to the spam folder.

Jeff says that this new behavior is intentional, and is intended to make
it hard for spam-bots to get our addresses.
Yet, our address are in the header
So, I don't understand how this goal is achieved.
Regardless: Even if successful, I appears that the cure is worse than
the disease.

  • The issue with this is that those who wish to use it as a web forum will never see anything unless someone provides a summary. So you will also not be able to search or find the data in the future unless that recipient provides a summary.
  • People have not been good about providing Summaries
I am open to changing the behavior however. So please think about the implications of switching the behavior and we can decide to make a change if necessary.

Hello Jeff,
Could you please include the original message or thread with yours
so we know what you are talking about without having to search through
other messages.

Thanks,

"Could you please include the original message or thread with yours so

Karl,

This is the problem with the hybrid forum/email list we have with the
new exploder. If folks don't include the content of the prior post in
their reply (the default if replying on the web site), then those only
seeing email don't have context for the reply. However, if the reply
contains the original post, the forum side becomes an unreadable mess
(check some of the threads on the web site.)

Lets give Jeff and the gang some time to sort through some of this. We
can't expect that a big departure from the previous convention will go
through without issues. We also can't expect things to be exactly as
they were and to be able to use the exploder as it was. The forums are
needed and better in many ways than the pure email list we had.

Jeff, let me know if I can help iron out any issues. My time is
limited, but I'd really like to see this new forum based system succeed.
I think there's a lot of merit in having new posts emailed (both into
the system and out), but replies not.

The source of the problem in my view is the ability to post to a thread
by sending an e-mail, and making the previous poster's e-mail address
available. This is the opposite of they way every forum I have ever
seen operates. It seems to me this was probably done to minimize the
effect on the way the lists operated, but I don't think you can have
everything. Something needs to be cut out.

Individual mails containing responses to watched threads? Fine.
Digests, too? Great! "Reply-All" e-mail to post to a thread? Not so
good for the forum, the list, or the users' privacy.

I would suggest changing the operation so that adding posts can be
accomplished through the forum only. People will still get their mails
and digests, they just won't be able to blindly hit "reply" to answer
(hey, maybe that will cut down on Joe Rude's "Who Cares?" psuedo-spam
responses to the list!). Also, remove the ability for other users to
see a poster's e-mail address and add in private message capability to
the forum. This will keep people's e-mails safe from spammers, and
ensure the responses get posted to the thread for the good of archiving.
