Labels and Tags: Understanding the Difference
Labels and Tags are tools for organizing and filtering community topics. However, having both can be confusing. So, how do Labels and Tags work, and how are they different?
Labels are chosen by the author of a new topic from a predefined list. At least one label is required. Each board has a list of labels created by the community team. For example, when you post a question on our Mathcad board, you can select a label to indicate that the question is about installation. You must chose at least ONE label. We recommend to apply only one label, 2 or 3 maximum. Other users can filter by this label and even subscribe to it to receive email notifications when someone posts a new Mathcad installation question.
To summarize Labels:
- Are required
- Can only be chosen by the author of the topic
- Come from a predefined list (ex: Mathcad)
- Can be subscribed to
First: filter the topic for one label:
Then subscribe like this:
In the example, you will land on a page like this: https://community.ptc.com/t5/forums/filteredbylabelpage/board-id/PTCMathcad/label-name/algebra_geometry
Tags on the other hand are more freeform. Any post can be tagged by anyone, not just the author. Tags are not required and there is no predefined list of tags. You can still use tags to filter posts, but you cannot subscribe to them.
To summarize Tags:
- Not required
- Can be added to any post not just the topic
- Can be added by anyone
- No predefined list
- No subscriptions
- Can be used to filter
On any conversation click "Top Tags" on the right side to reveal a list of tags you can filter with.
