10.0 Question

We are on the freakin bubble... 30% of the way thru Windchill 9.1 upgrade from IL 3.4 and now being asked to consider implementing WC 10 instead of 9.1. Apparently there are hooks to SAP that are more viable in 10 than in 9.1, and these hooks would be used with a parallel project having a very hard deadline.

My approach has always been to rollout later versions of software after most issues have been worked out (Windchill 10.1?). But the combo of SAP hooks and not repeating the upgrade anguish has caused management to ask me to consider 10.0.

So my question - does anyone have experience they're willing to share regarding Windchill 10... is it stable enough to get basic IL 3.4 functionality without worrying about all the bells and whistles?

I'm going to run this by our implementation team from PTC as well and will post a summary of what I find out.

Thanks for anything you can contribute.

We are in exactly the same boat.

It has taken us about 5 years from concept to go-live to get from a highly
customized Windchill Foundation PDM (now on 8.0) to PDMLink 9.1
(originally we wanted to go to PDMLink 9.0, but then 9.1 was the "fix" for
most of our problems, so we moved to 9.1). We go live in March of this
year - just in time for most of our new problems to be "fixed" in PDMLink
10.

As a result, we are also having to look at moving almost immediately to WC
10 after stabilizing PDMLink 9.1.

Unfortunately, it is so difficult to migrate a full-blown Windchill
implementation in world-wide use that it seems to take as long to upgrade
as it does for a new version to come out.

The only good news is that we are re-implementing PDMLink 9.1 without any
database customizations, and with greatly reduced application
customizations, which should make the use of PTC Upgrade and Migration
tools possible, whereas we could not use those tools to move into PDMLink
due to the heavy, data-base level enhancements and system customizations
we had made to Foundation PDM.

Windchill 10.0 can't be stable yet - not production released.

I installed it two times so far (PDMLink and ProjectLink) and spent about 6 hours sort of randomly looking at and trying things. I like 90% of what I see but there are some things that don't seem quite right and I need to take a close 2nd look at.

It will likely take some time to get the core PDMLink working, coming from 3.4 - tough to plan on having an ERP integration in place on day 1. Would be very worthwhile making the big jump asap for core functionality, and then a series of smaller jumps / enhancements / additions after. Going from 9.1 to 10.0 will be a much smaller effort than ILink 3.x to any Windchill. 10 has a VERY different look and feel vs. 9.1. Users will need some time to go from 9.1 to 10.0 if they start on 9.1, but I got used to it within a few hours.
