Auto Renaming On Windchill

Hi everyone,

In my company we have a numbering which goes like;

504-92611301 (ASM)

          - 504-92611301-1

          - 504-92611301-2

          - 504-92611301-3

          - 504-92611301-4

But, Creo creates part numbers randomly and i need to rename every single thing one by one. It is okay with several parts but sometimes I have thousands of parts in one assembly. Is there any way to rename parts in an order? Thanks in advance

I am not sure the system will be able to auto-generate numbers like you described. What is your current OIR for EPMDocuments? Can you share it here? If you allow it to control numbering for EPMDocuments (allow you to enter your own numbers), they I think the rename UI (in Creo or in workspace before you upload) is your best bet. This way you can use a prefix to mass change all of them. Just  out of curiosity, your numbering standard does not offer much in the way of part reuse? How does that work when you have sub-assemblies or borrow from some other CAD assembly? Do you just make copies?

Hi,

I dont have acess to our OIR or EPMDocuments as i am just a user, so unfortunately I cannot share it here. I will ask our admin for numbering from workspace if possible.  I think that will work for most parts.

And for your question. Normally we were using numbering like;

-504-00123401

     -504-00456701

     -504-00895601

     -504-00774101

This works perfect for assemblies but, we have a lot of welded parts and we dont want to use bunch of numbers to describe a basic sheet metal. If we are using fittings or fasteners, we are using legacy rules but for welded parts we are switching to numbering like; "504-00788801-1 / 504-0078801-2".

Thus, we have same sheet metal parts for seperate welded parts, for that we are using same part.

It can go like;

-504-00778801

         -504-00778801-1

         -504-00778801-2

         -504-00380301-7 (Same part from another assembly.)

         -504-00778801-3

I am kinda newbie to Windchill. But I am trying to learn all details and improve myself and my team with faster and efficient design techniques. Thanks in advance.

We have similar style, not as long, for weldments or inseparable assemblies. The OIR controls how things are setup when objects are created on check in. Your admin will likely need to turn off auto-numbering following this: https://www.ptc.com/en/support/article/CS20158?source=search

but they might have already done so. When you create new items, if it allows you to set the number field, you are all set. Easiest thing is to set number to filename since both have to be unique in the system and aligning makes it so you do not have to have two unique things. This means that you cannot have to CAD objects with the same filename NOR can you have two CAD objects with the same number. Making them the same has a single unique identifier for them. From there, you can use mass rename tools in Windchill or in workspace to set them or change them as you see fit. I doubt Windchill OIR rules will be smart enough to know to auto-number based on you business rules.

You can try to tweak the OIR to use the parent number (Alias_attribute )  + a suffix "-" + a sequence .

The issue is when you get many levels you will end up with large numbers that you cant follow any more

504-92611301 (ASM)

          - 504-92611301-1

                     -504-92611301-1-1

                           -504-92611301-1-1-1
