Dots in the part number.....

Dots in the part number.....

I got a vendor who's part numbers have dots in them. We have to intermingle
our databases (not Windchill per se, this is Team center)

So I got a big part number problem because if you try to create a
1234.123.1234.prt you will get an error about how dots are illegal.

I do have a problem with dots being illegal, as I like to use them a lot....

So I talked with some Seimens guys and there is a possiblity of renaming
the JT files to 1234-123-1234.jt

That will allow me to have our parts use dashes and their parts intermingle
in our assemblies using the JT versions with dashes.

But I am still hope full that someone on this forum will jump out and say
that they figured it out and its simple like using quotes or something
"123.1234.123.prt"

Anyone? I'll give you a Friday tomorrow...

Pro/e doesn't allow "." in the part number.

What do i do if I have a part number like 456.1233.1235.prt? STEP defaults
to 456_1233_1235.STEP. they probably found this early on so they default to
"_" for the "."

Well I'm working on a synchronized database with the customer their parts
have dots so we have to have dots.

Thus the dilemma.

I got three options:
have the other guys rename millions of parts to "_"
have the parts rename while the databases sinchronize to "_"
or have pro rename the files as it opens them to "_"

But some how I gotta have dots when the files go back to the database as
pro/e and JT (like creo view.... light weight model for NX/Solidworks
exportable from Pro/e)

Hey if anyone else has encountered a rename issue like this or similar I
would like to know how to solve it. Otherwise I might as well go for NX
training. I'm OK with Jlink or C++ or even 00001001001010111's.

Not using the file name as the part number for the item master is something
that is done on windchill and probably even intralink 3.4. I'm not really
entirely positively 100% on what to say.

The item master can definetly have a different name than the stuff
attached. But then when consumers grab the information by the piece, all
the names of the pieces should also make sence. I like Joel's take. So
the BOM shows dashes not slashes by replacing them on the BOM table. We
have no BOM table on the face of the drawing, only inceparable assemblies
have that. But if we had something similar that worked towards pro/e being
able to open a file that is attached to the item master with dots in the
name, that would be what I'm looking for.

Good comments guys. So far I'm loosing the battle, but I have hope.

regards, Alfonso

Hi Alfonso,****

** **

How about stop using file name for part number and use a different
parameter to populate the number field of drawings and parts lists.****
