In order to prevent confusion our system was setup to keep all three the same. That way if only one is visible in a particular table, you will still be able to find what you're looking for. I have considered changing Common Name to map to the part parameter Description instead, but haven't actually implemented it yet. Doing so would allow simple searches to return objects based on description. Right now search by description we have to use advanced searches with that parameter added to the search. Also, I should mention that all three of the values CAN be changed after creation (including Number) as long as the user doing the changing has the necessary permissions.

Windchill gives a lot of attention to the Number field. It enforces uniqueness of this field of course as well. Number and filename are kept the same typically. Remember, everything in Windchill doesn’t have a file associated with it so Number is really the key. 40chars for number.

Name is commonly referred to as Descriptive Name. You get 60chars and this is where you should put in your description. As you have found, Name is also very visible by default though uniqueness isn’t required for it.

Name and Number are important as many defaults in Windchill are setup to use/show them. If/when you ever go to PDMLink the BOM items generated from the CAD items will use these fields for building out the Name and Number of the BOM items created as a result.
