Multiple objects - same name (number)

Hi All,

We are migrating from another system to Windchill. In our current system uniqueness is defined by 3 things: Type, Name (number) and Revision. i.e. TNR. So, we took advantage of this in our existing system and defined schema (soft types in Windchill speak) like PL, PRD and PRD-CU as we use a number of document type designators in our MRP system.

So, now we have 3 types all having the same name and all having the same revision just different type designators:

PL  1234 A

PRD  1234 A

PRD-CU  1234 A

each containing unique content.

Works well in our current system as the type makes them unique from each other; integrators have told us there is no way to do this in Windchill. Their solution is to put prefixes (PL, PRD, PRD-CU etc.) in our Names and Numbers and add an attribute with the "real" name (doc number) and search for that.

Please tell me there is a more elegant solution than the one above (prefixes???) . I thought the answer may lie in soft types but it does not.

We have 15 years history working with TNR. It works well.

TIA

MJC
