Part Numbering in Windchill

while creating part number in windchill(Auto Numbering),how to add custom prefix with number.

Example:

Part Name is :HEXBOLT.

Part Number Should be HB00001

Part Name is CUSHIONBOLT

Part Number should be CB00002

How to do this .

Can anyone help me.

You will need multiple OIRs for each type that you want a unigue prefix for.

You might be better off creating those types of parts in a family table.

say for instance if I have 1000 parts then I need to have 1000 OIRs with unique prefix.

That is huge and not the right one since part numbers are keep on increasing day by day.

You might be better off creating those types of parts in a family table.

can you pls elaborate a bit family table

No, you only need an OIR for each prefix you need.

You may have 128 HB parts, that is 1 OIR.

For your 234 CB parts, that is a second OIR.

Family tables allow you to have multiple instances of a common design in a single file. All of the descriptions and interfaces are the same for all instances. Makes replacement very easy. Here is a sample family table of hex head cap screws.

The exact scenario is here,

Say for instance I have a part Copper Bolt with Prefix CB00001 - Copper Bolt

another part Cushion Bolt with Prefix CB000002 - Cushion Bolt

part should be auto created by referring the name from CAD drawing (Copper Bolt,Cushion Bolt) like CB00001 and CB00002 respectively and name also should be auto created.

The part number for the part is created before the drawing is created, so pulling a number for a new part from the drawing is not possible.

I also see a flaw in your naming. CB for Cooper Bolt and CB for Cushion Bolt. How do you tell them apart? If you want to use prefixes, they need to be unique.

There was a wrong communication in my earlier mail.

I will tell you the requirement in details,

Req:1 part number should be auto created with part name short form as prefix 

Ex: if part name is Cushion Bolt then part number should be CB00001 (system should take C from Cushion and B from Bolt)

Req:2 for Part Name Cushion Bolt) it should get assigned to part number automatically (Say for instance the drawing name is also Cushion Bolt)

Pls let me know now.

is there a way to achieve this requirement or tell your thoughts on this.
