Version: Windchill 12.0
Use Case: I am planning to install the Cluster set up on Linux environment (RHEL).
Description:
Hi Experts,
I am planning to install the Cluster set up on Linux environment (RHEL). I have below questions
1.What's the best practice used in industry to install WC on Linux environment with respect to the installation user? Most stable version of Linux is nay one using.
2.Do we install the WC on Linux with root user?
3.If we root user is not the correct one, then which another user we can use?
4.If we use other users what level of accessor permissions, we need to provide the other user? If anyone using other users, can you let me what is the access/permission that user possess?
Any other opinions on cluster will be most helpful.
Thanks,
I am not an expert on clusters but it seems to be a bit vague of a question. Have you read the installer's guide? I install as root but I do not run as root. I change ownership to a dedicated windchill user since its not required to run as root. Installer handles things like webservers and such so it makes things easier. The installer will create installation files in the installing user's home area which you need to have future updates recognize the installation. Suggest following CMMC rules on least privileged access and harden system.
Thanks, avillanueva for your reply.
I am new to Windchill world and only familiar with monolithic installation so far.
I have gone through the installation docs, but not able to find nay info one using another user to install, mostly its mentioned as admin user.
Th whole hunch for above question is whether it's good to go for another user or root. We have info that many companies prefer the different user for installation so would be interested to know if we go for another user what access and permission needed.
can you suggested more on " Suggest following CMMC rules on least privileged access and harden system" as I could not get this point.
Thanks
There are two options:
1. you start installer as root user. At one of the steps in install screen, you can specify a non-root user for Windchill installation. The non-root user will need to read/write access for every file
2. You install everything as root user. Then post-install, update the permission or ownership for Windchill base install directory to the desired non-root user.
