Windchill Web Parts for Sharepoint

Hello! Is anyone usingPTC Web Parts for Sharepoint? If so, how do you use it and is it worth the trouble to integrate, oversimply having users access the information in Windchill? Is it even still being offered by PTC? My boss is asking - seems that everything has to be in Sharepoint these days...

Thanks in advance!

Joanna

Hi Joanna
having users accessing directly the data is always better than integration but you have to measure the cost of integration and risk associated to it vs the cost of the licences.....
"seems that everything has to be in Sharepoint these days..."

I really do not understand why some people talk so positively about sharepoint. I was in a company who started using it because it was there and free. Now I am in a company who uses Sharepoint 365. This is an empty box, you can't do anything without asking a consultant to develop it and customize it and we have no control over changes Microsoft can do. The other day someone wanted sharepoint to manage and track project progress. 10 days of programming to provide some very basic functionalities such as listing the project and statuses (+ a bit more) into a table which you can't even filter.Really. Windchill does that OOTB and even more.Same with document management......
So trying to use Sharepoint to play the role of a PDM is overcomplicating the problems. Use things for what it is for. Sharepoint is an advanced Windows explorer......
Good luck Joanna

Joanna,

After spending much time and effort attempting to implement this in our environment, we were told by PTC in May 2014 that this product was being discontinued.

It seems that the colloration between PTC and sharepoint did not work long. I recall PTC launching ProductPoint a PDM/PLM based on sharepoint... That did not last long before they drop it....

With the news last year of PTC stating that they have discontinued support for Web Parts for SharePoint in Windchill 10.2, the ETRAGE integration solution is positioned to fill this void and provide extended functionality.

The tool provides a bidirectional communication between SharePoint and Windchill. Changes initiated in Windchill are passes to SharePoint where they can be reviewed and updated. Updates are automatically transferred back into Windchill. In addition to the change request, viewables, BOM, attributes and parameters can be transferred to SharePoint.

We have three current applications that have been developed for customers. The first is change request management, the second is for accessing documents in Windchill from SharePoint and the third is to approve Windchill tasks in SharePoint. ETRAGE can develop various applications where Windchill attributes, CAD parameters, BOMs, viewable files of CAD documents, Windchill documents or SharePoint metadata can be transferred back and forth between the applications.

Joanna,

As mentioned, PTC discontinued Windchill Web Parts a while back. Fishbowl customers are using linkAccess to integrate with SharePoint with success. Fishbowl also has the ability to enhance integrations based on use cases, but NacNac brings up valid points when you step back and look at what business problem you are trying to solve and then possible solution requirements.

Hopefully we will see you in Nashville and can discuss Fishbowl options.

Best regards,

Rick Passolt

Yes,

PTC discontinued Windchill WebParts for SharePoint and Windchill SocialLink. Impacted customers were notified last year and the PTC Product Calendar has been updated with the latest support information.

"When it was first released, PTC received positive feedback about Windchill WebParts for SharePoint and some PTC customers have incorporated this tool into their overall SharePoint solution. However, use of this module has been limited and PTC has learned that customers prefer to employ a variety of collaboration interface frameworks."
