representations needed now - no waiting for publishing for hours

Guru's,

Is there are way to get the creo view representations to be available immediately after CAD models are checked in? We are running into a situation where we are having to wait for the representations to publish on a regular basis (sometimes several hours or even overnight). We would like to be able to see the creo-view files just after it is checked in instead of waiting a couple hours for it to make its way to the top of the cue.

This is what happens when you check in a model:

1- The model gets put in a queue (waiting line for processing)

2- If there are no objects in the queue it starts processing immediately

a. It transfers the model to the worker machine (copies the CAD files and all dependencies)

b. Opens the model in Creo View (headless, you don't see the interface)

c. It processes out a viewable

d. It transfers the viewable back to the server and viola...now you see it

Normally this is a fairly quick process but if your models are large and complex and a lot of people are dumping in a lot of new models then the queue for that Worker will be large and you will have to wait your turn.

Other configurations can also slow this process down depending on how things have been setup on your system.

Here are some options that can help:

1- Add more workers and a specific queue for each.

a. You can have a single worker machine act as TWO workers if you want. It'll still require 2 Creo licenses and a very powerful machine though.

2- Add two queues per worker.

a. This helps with larger models as the queue in waiting will have already performed the file transfer and hence the worker can immediately begin processing in Creo once it's finished with the previous job instead of waiting for the transfer.

3- Ensure that the property which tells Windchill to republish top level objects once lower level objects is turned off. This is a nice feature but it can put an ENORMOUS workload on your CAD publishing system if it's not sophisticated.

Steve,

Yes this is possible via the Custom Checkin action in Creo.

You'll be presented with a dialog box that allows you to select "check in models and viewables".

Exactly. Open the model. File, Check In, Custom Check In, Models and Viewables. (At least in WF5 / WC 9.1)

There is a slight difference in the representations list. The one from the publisher will say "EPM: As Stored" (assuming that's the criteria being used). The one created at check-in will not.

Yes, I'm sure. The rep is created by the his local running session of Pro/Creo and then uploaded to the server. It never gets sent to the publisher. I tried it to make sure. The timestamp on the representation EXACTLY matches the EPM Document. This is not the case when sent to the publisher.

I'm not sure it fits this use case, but. I was able to change the Priority to get what we needed, which was, on state change H, but Check-In M. On Demand are H ootb, I believe.

Okay, it *does* still get processed by *something*, but not by the worker agent and not by the publisher. Just to make sure I wasn't going crazy I completely shut down worker and stopped the publisher server's processes. I then made a change in Pro/e and checked it in with the viewable. I can confirm that it still shows up in the Publish Job Monitor, but it did NOT go through the publish server.
