Random number sequence

I have a customer who would like to be able to auto-number objects but needs the number to be random, not sequential. Once a number is used/taken, it is no londer available in the sequence, similar to a sequential sequence. For example;

X19

X62

X38

etc. and 19,62, & 38 would not be use again.

Is there a way to setup a sequence so that the numbers are random? Or a way to simulate that?
