COLOR as a parameter in family table

Pro/Users,
Can "color" of a part be called out as a parameter into a family table and have different instances having different colors?
I would appreciate any reference or similar experiences.

Luke,

I had posed this question to PTC Tech support a few months ago an
drecieved the following response:

Dear MARK STEFFKE,

You opened Call 7103510 with PTC Technical Support on 13-May-2009, with
the following description:

"Is there a way to parametrically control colors/textures? User would
like to apply a particular color to the part using Program/relations or
parameters."

After further investigation, it has been determined that the
functionality you are looking for is not currently part of the
application specification. It is not possible to apply a particular
color using Program or relations. User can however use a mapkey to open
the appearance editor window and then select the desired color from the
pallette.

If you would like this feature to be implemented in a future release, I
would recommend filing an Enhancement Request via the PTC Website for
this functionality:

Since that email though, I have learned of a possible way to control
color (not textures) by parameter but have not tried. In ProToolkit
there are some old ProDevelop functions that can define a color, using
RGB values. Each color would have its own unique RGB values. This
could only help you if you had access to ProToolkit though, and had
someone willing and able to write the app. I am not sure if there is
anything in Jlink that could do this or not.

If my memory serves me right this has been submitted as an enhancement request any number of times since around ...oh... release 10 or so.

My $.02, I would not bet on it being available lets just say... in your life time!

So, what is the verdict on this? Is it a good idea to add all of this
information to a family table? Will it work well within WF3 and WF4?

As I mentioned:

You can assign an appearance to different materials, and in a family table you can swap out the materials in each instance for the appearance you want. You have to add all the materials to the generic, and then add the "PTC_MATERIAL_NAME" parameter to the family table. Then it will give you the choices of all the materials currently loaded in the part. However, this doesn't work in WF3, and it sort of works in WF4 but only if you do a secondary regen. for instance, I have made family tables of fasteners with different materials, and at the assembly level it will give all the fasteners from that table the appearance of the last instance constrained, until you do another regen. I sure wish they'd fix this......
