Creo2 questions

First off: wow, PTC did a really good job alienating the experienced
users in Creo2. In previous releases I was always able to find my way,
but this time, the 'easy' GUI really has me stomped.

A few questions that are hopefully simple to answer:

1. What happened to the help? If I go to help, I end up on a web page
asking me to create an account. I naively created an account ("basic
account"), but now I'm still not getting help, instead I'm getting
"account not authorized. You do not have permission to view this
directory or page using the credentials you supplied.". What the heck?
Why am I not allowed to access the help?

2. How do I create sketched datum points? I'm able to create a sketch
with only a few points in it, but the points don't show up as datums.

3. Somehow I've managed to get my model to be in an "unfinished state"
simplified rep, which makes me now unable to get into Mechanica... eh
sorry, "Simulate". Probably due to me using "set representation to" on
the sketch feature (in an effort to turn it into datums). What is this
"set representation to" supposed to do? How do I get into a 'finished
state'?

4. Why am I sometimes unable to hide or unhide layers while doing other
things? (I'm not even sure when it happens exactly). It is not very
practicle to think that one can set layers to the correct setting and
then create a feature. I need to be able to switch layers on or off at
any point in the software, be it in a sketch, in Simulate, or wherever.
Is it just me or are layers broken?

5. Why do I not get the Sketch View when I'm starting a new sketch? And
why do I not get to pick Sketch References straight away? Now I have to
do extra clicks every time I sketch, bah! Is there a way to fix this?

My sense is that PTC has grown to the point where managers without
knowledge of engineering let alone CAD are in charge of functionality.
How else do you come up with a seperate menu for "Render"? If there is
anything unimportant in engineering, its rendering. Please hide it in a
deep menu structure somewhere, and give me a useful menu instead.

Hopefully you guys can help me find my way soon so I can start liking
some of the new things in Creo2...

Patrick Asselman

Unfortunately, you will need now to spend more money to be indoctrinated as to why this new interface is 'much better' than either the wildfire interface or the classic interface. In addition, they changed the background and entity colors again.

I am still on WF5, after a one project foray into CREO1. I am holding off as long as possible to go to CREO2 this summer, I've got work to do.

Good luck!

I’m not doing a lot of work in Creo 2 yet, but I do have an answer to #2. Starting in WF5 there are two kinds of points & centerlines in sketcher. The ‘geometry point’ will create a datum point after the sketch is complete or an axis if the sketch is used in an extrude.

On the help, did help get installed on your machine? There’s a separate download (as there has been for years) for the help files.

There are config options to control getting prompted for references or not and if sketcher starts in 3D or sketch view, look them up (once you get help sorted. :-/)

Creo does come with a nice command search utility at the top right to help find things in the new UI.

As with other releases, I don't like certain aspects (help login being one of them), but I guess I'm not as down on it as others. In fact, I have definitely grown accustomed to Office 2010, so the tab/ribbon really appeals to me.

1) Yes, the help is now behind the login (basic account setup required). Not positive why this is. But, if you haven't installed it, install the help content from the installer package and take advantage of Learning Connector. There are some really nice videos to step you through. Even for those of us who are, er, seasoned users. Actually, they are part of the “Getting Started” part. And, if you haven’t seen it, the command search can help get acclimated as well.

2) Sketched datum points is similar to WF5 (don’t know from which version you are switching). Sketch and then use the datum point create tool while in sketcher. However, in CP2, there is only one datum point while in sketched curve. WF5 still had the two separate points (but I maybe that’s what the Construction mode is for, actually and I’m just not understanding/applying it just right).

3) I’m not quite sure what you mean. I think you mean on-demand reps. If so, to save a rep, go to the view manager,

4) Haven’t experienced that. I can access layers in pretty much any mode and as required (assembling, creating a feature, creating a datum, Simulate, etc.). Other details?!

5) Are you talking about the sketch datum feature? The workflow is the same as WF5. If you mean in an extrude (or other sketched) feature, it should take you straight to sketch. You can hold rmb to access the sketch setup or references in either since it doesn’t put you in references right away. Another of those decisions I’m not uber-enthusiastic about, but it’s set up to minimize clicks to sketch (in the case of an extrude feature, it’s two to get to begin sketching. One to select extrude, one to select the sketch plane. Then you are automatically taken to sketcher. In the absence of weird geometry that doesn’t lend itself to the auto orient part, that is.). But I’ll take that for the gains in other area. Oh, and while sketching, if you want an additional reference, hold the Alt key down to select a reference on the fly. Kinda nice.

I'll take a stab at a couple of these points...

1.I'm not sure about this. The Creo Parametric Help Center can be set up so it doesn't require a login to access. There is a zip file to download from PTC that contains the help files. Once that's ready to go, add an environment variable pointing to the proper location and the help button (the question mark icon) works. Perhaps you're trying to access the learning connector, which requires the correct license purchase to access AFAIK.

4. This is nothing new. We were on WF4 until early December and I distinctly remember there have always been functions that restrict what can be done in the layer tree. I'm not sure if there are more now, but this is definetly not some new hurdle.

5. In WF, a user would pick the references, then pick the sketch button to be brought into sketcher. In Creo, the user is brought into sketcher, then picks the references.

I'll second what Brian said about the interface. Not only do I now like it, a significant portion of my users adapted rather quickly and easily. Far more than I anticipated like it, while far fewer than I anticipated dislike it. Like any interface change, it does take a little time to get used to. General consensus around our facility is that it was between one and two weeks to fully adapt. Certainly there are little things here and there that are annoying that the users complain about. While it may not be 100% enthusiastic, the overall user feeling is 'thumbs up'.

As for the web account, you have to upgrade the account.

There are also a bunch of free videos to help you out. Check out these links.
Smart Extrusions

Thank you for your - sometimes elaborate - responses.

I forgot to mention that I came from Wildfire 4, so I think I skipped
one version being WF5/Creo1?
Also I am still working on Windows XP with Office 2003, so no
experience with Ribbon interfaces yet.
Mind you, I'm not opposed to changes, and I'm sure I'll get used to
Creo2 (I'm already feeling more confident after one day use). But I was
surprised that I got totally stuck and unable to do what I wanted. This
never happened to me before in any previous upgrades.

My users and I actually love Creo 2 over Wildfire 4 or 5. In fact, my users would wrestle you to the ground if you switch them back. I find Creo 2 much easier to use and much faster or productive.

You simply need to learn some tweaks to old traditional methods you are used to and you will be fine. When I create a feature and get into sketch, I don't pick anything at all but the surface I want to sketch on. Not sure what you are doing wrong here but again it's just a training issue.

I think the links provided should help get you aquainted with Creo 2 and I believe that with a little time, you will like many of the changes made.

"Too many people walk around like Clark Kent, because they don't realize they can Fly like Superman"

Just responding to one statement here:

* There is a command search utility that can get you where you want.

Nice, but the problem I have with that is you have to know the name of what you want to use before it is usable (quite difficult for non-native English speakers not yet aware of Pro/E-speak), and it doesn’t teach you where the thing you were looking for is located in the menus.

When you do a search on a word, don’t pick on the hits, just hover over them with the mouse, the tab and pick will be hi-lited in yellow.

David Haigh

Thanks David, very useful!

I'll change my opinion to "it may be useful in the future, but it needs
work".
The reason being that you can't find everything in there yet. For
instance "simpl" does not return any results.

I have to say I'm starting to like Creo2 better after working with it a
bit.
But I sincerely hope they will stop coming up with new UIs now, and
focus on improving the existing UI for the next 5 years.

Patrick Asselman
