Data Management for Small/Medium Business Deployments

I am leading a new Focus Group within the PTC/USER Technical Committees that focuses on Data Management for small Windchill deployments.

This group was formed after the June 2011 PTC/USER conference because the user community spoke out (loudly) about not having good options for Data Management.

With INTRALINK 3.x no longer supported and Windchill PDMLink being more than what most small customers need/want, and the retirement of ProductPoint, many of us do not feel that PTC has a good solution for small deployments.

PTC wants to understand the need/requirements for small deployments, and that is what the Windchill for Small Deployments Focus Group is all about. We have met several times since June via conference calls and web meetings, and are about to have our first face-to-face meeting in two weeks.

At our next meeting the agenda will be to start prioritizing/categorizing requirements for Data Management in small deployments and to understand current and future PTC plans of interest to smaller customers.

Please share your concerns and indicate what is most important to you as a small customer or a manager of a small Windchill deployment.

Hey, I have an idea, just bring back ProductPoint. Or better yet, open
source it and see where it goes...

AMEN to that !

We are one of the companies that were affected by the killing of ProductPoint. We were in the process of implementing ProductPoint when it died and were forced to move to Windchill 10. Although Windchill 10 may be a great product with a much more user friendly experience, it's still an overkill for small companies and the hardware cost to run Windchill are extremely expensive.

We opted to move to Windchill 10 and we are currently in the implementation process. We decided to go with Windchill because we are looking at taking advantage of future processes that Windchill is setup for. Initially we will only manage our CAD data with Windchill and then open up the technology with time.

For some small companies, this is not an option for them. They only wish to manage their CAD data and that's it. They want the simplicity, ease of administration and the cost that ProductPoint provided.

The Windchill hardware requirements are very expensive, the UI although improved, is still much more difficult than ProducPoint and the administration is far more involved. Small companies don't have dedicated Windchill Administrators that are sometimes required to keep the system running.

We are scheduled to install Windchill and start bringing data in on April and I will have more input for those smaller companies that may be going the same direction.

Just some thoughts.
