I actually helped an Industrial designer look at machinery layouts using
Sketchup. We brought in an image of the 2D plant building layout and
then created walls, doors, etc... by sketching on the imported image
projected on a plane.
I then started making 3D models of industrial machines, HMC's VMC's,
Presses, Shot Blasters, etc... by taking some basic dims of the
equipment, projecting a couple of photos on rectangular cubes, and then
tugging, pulling, clipping the model as needed. I modeled about 2 dozen
pieces of machinery in about 2 days.
Doing the walk through was the biggest benefit, driving the fork truck
down the aisles, looking at sight lanes, etc...
Amazing for a 'free' product.
