Entering design competitions

As you may know, PTC is sponsoring the Create the Future Design Contest 2010 - see this link for details: http://contest.techbriefs.com/

This contest was 'launched in 2002 by the publishers of NASA Tech Briefs magazine to help stimulate and reward engineering innovation'... and I personally think this is a great idea. Individual designers as well a small start-ups can enter their product ideas and win funding that may help them get closer to realizing their ideas.

And the number of entries each year speaks for itself - there are plenty of good ideas out there and people who are trying to make them public.

What I am quite curious about, is how do you guys find the time to work on ideas in your spare time, prepare a description and submit your stuff? Kudos to all of you who have ever participated in such a contest! And thank you for doing these things - without any extra effort, there would be little innovation, right?

If you have a great design ready or you are currently working on one, why not take a look at the contest rules, maybe you will be the one to make my life easier - From the perfect can opener to industrial filters reducing air pollution - I guess everything is possible.

Anyway, back to my question: Do you think the same about contests and have you made some experiences with any contests in the US or other countries?

Can't believe we're near the end already! The NASA Tech Briefs' Create the Future contest deadline is tomorrow at midnight!

Submit your design and change the world!! --> http://bit.ly/degmS1

If you don't have a design to enter, the contest is still really cool to check out. Most registrants create a public profile displaying their entry. You can comment on them and also vote for your favorite (popular vote gets a BIG prize). NTB has also posted a list of all the previous winners too which is quite interesting to see!

Thanks to everyone who has submitted their designs and supported the contest. I think PTC, Comsol and Nasa Tech Briefs have truly achieved our goal of stimulating and rewarding engineering innovation. We have over 700 entries right now and I hear new ones are coming in at a rapid pace as we near the deadline.

There's still time! http://bit.ly/degmS1

Here's a quick update on the contest:

It is closed for submissions, but you can still participate by voting for your favorite design.

Cast your vote! Go to http://contest.techbriefs.com/ to view, vote, and comment on your favorite entries.
Voting deadline is August 31, 2010.
Here are a few examples of Pro/ENGINEER submissions (of course, I am biased and would love to see a Pro/ENGINEER entry win) - but there are tons of others to choose from.
