Finding Dimensions in Family Table

Finding Dimensions in Family Table

What is the best way to find a dimension within a family table? Is there some sort of search function that can filter through the family table? For example, if I just have a dimension 'd160', what is the fastest way to find it in a large family table.

You can find a dimension by name using the search tool (binoculars icon). In this example it is used to find D32 in a model. Note the look in and look by settings below.

Thanks for the suggestion. Although this only highlights the dimension in the model view. I am trying to find the dimension while I am working in the family table window.

It will only appear as a column heading in the family table view. Rename the dimensions used in the family table to something meaningful.

With a family table that is hundreds of items long, it doesn't matter what the name is, it is still difficult to find.

Can you zip and post a copy of your family table? Maybe if we look at it, we can get a better idea of what you are trying to do or look for.

Hi,

do you have Microsoft Excel installed? You can click Edit in Excel button in Family table dialog box and edit family table contents in Excel.

With large family tables also, there are times I open the family table in Excel and then do a search on "d160". As Martin mentioned, you can edit it there, or now at least you know where it is in the family table, close excel and go to that dimension to edit it.

Hi,

suggestions:

  • open family table in Excel and find dimension 'd160'
  • export family table into text file, open exported file in Notepad and find dimension 'd160'

What is the use case for this search? If you describe the challenge that you have in context then someone may offer a better way to deal with the issue.

I currently have a family table that contains hundreds of dimensions and features. To name them all would be very cumbersome, but if I know the default dimension name, I'd like to be able to open the family table and easily find that dimension within the long list of items. Even if I did name all the dimensions, to be able to find it in the family table is not really any easier to find other than the fact it might stand out because it looks different in the table header. The excel solution is effective, but involves opening another app/window. A built-in search function that takes me to the location of the dimension in question would be the quickest solution.

Hi

You can go into the family table & find the dimension you are looking at,

& press add/delete the table columns & click on the same dimension, it will highlight in the window as shown in the picture
