Intralink 3.4 - Failed to take or refresh license PART II

Thanks to everyone who pointed me in the direction of the network issue. It is in fact a network issue, but I am not sure how to fix it yet. When I went to run the ptcsetup for Flexnet is said that it could not find the IP address. It turns out that our IT department added a network card to the computer. The existing card is set to primary and the second is for backups. Has any had any experience with 2 network cards in one computer and how to get Flexnet to see the right one?

I think you're going to need to edit the registry to make sure the one
you want is first in the list. Did this many years ago, so I don't
remember the exact place to look.

If I'm not mistaken, if you run LMTOOLS, the address you want to submit to
PTC when requesting a new license pack is found under the System Settings
tab. Our license server has 2 network cards, and the address listed there
worked for us.

I have also changed the registry as Doug described. Here is the path I
found in some very old notes:

hkey_local_machine
software
microsoft
windows nt
current version
network cards

Find the folder that contains the network card your license references. I
typically named that folder 1

The downside is that I had to reboot for this to take effect.

If you search the PTC KB or Microsoft KB for an article about setting
the primary network card on a laptop, that should get you to the
registry fix needed. This problem is similar to laptops with wireless
and wired NICs.

You don't necessarily have to order new licenses for the new NIC. Yeah,
licenses are tied to the MAC address of the NIC on the machine.

That's exactly what I was thinking of. You need to make sure the folder
(key) number for the network card you have your license set for is the
lower number. You might have to shuffle the folder names (rename).

If this is a laptop, another consideration is physical network connection.
If the NIC is not connected to a network, Windows will sense this, and disabled the NIC.
In such a case, FlexLM will fail.
To change this behavior, you need to disable Media Sensing, to keep the NIC alive at all times.

I think there is an easier way.

Open your network connections. (for me, I right clicked on the icon in my
taskbar.)





Then, select the Advanced option, and Advanced Settings.





From here, you can simply reorder the network cards by 'pushing' it up or
down.





Not sure if a reboot is required, but that's a whole bunch easier than
digging in the registry.

After you have finished the network priority setting to use your existing license, put a sticky note on the server that basically tells IT that engineering MUST be informed before ANY changes are made to this machine, both hardware and software!
