Model Compare

All,

On wf4....

Have 2 models. One original, other modified proposed changes from
vendor.

We use minimum dimmed drawings.

I heard tell of a way to compare the 2 models.

Can someone please share?

Is this easy or cumbersome?

Kind of complicated casting.

Oh....one possible curve....the vendor sent back STEP files. I assume
this "compare" works only with native Pro/E files? We are attempting to
have the native files sent....but they may not give up...have to see,
but would like to know if the statement is true.

Kind of cumbersome. I put both parts into a temporary assembly right on top of each other - Make one red the other green and move them before or after each other in the model tree. The differences then become very apparent.

It’s under analysis -> compare part. By Feature compares to Proe parts, feature by feature, and tells you what’s different. By Geometry is a little more opaque, it is supposed to highlight areas of difference I think. Been a while since I tried it, it may take some experimentation to get decent results.

In Creo 2.0, the compare by geometry is not very good. We’ve tried it a couple of times with users complaining about the results every time.

I have done this poor mans effort many times. In shaded mode you will get a quick idea of the differences (external) when one color hides another and vice versa on the colors, but also when you get the "zebra striping" of the two colors you will know surfaces are co-planer. In addition if you query select the parts over and over again it will basically toggle between the two parts and you can start seeing differences in line location between the two parts especially on internal features. Once you see visually the locations of differences you can take a closer look by measuring.

I hear ya Mike - that may end up being my route?
I am waiting to hear back about getting the native Pro/E.
Is is true that it must be native to native for comparison? Makes sense
that it would.

For a feature based comparison, yes. Not for ‘by geometry’ or if you’re simply overlaying models.

Another idea would be to use a merged cut. If you have the Advanced Assembly extension, you can merge in a model atop another one and cut away instead of adding material, therefore leaving behind the difference. This may be more or less useful than putting two models on top of each other, especially when it comes to internal features. It all depends on the nature/complexity of your model.

Obviously, though, I think comparing two model through the built in analysis functionality is ideal if it works well.

All,
I tried a sample 2 simple part. I made 1.prt as a 1 x 1 x 1 block.
Copied it to 2.prt as a 2 x 2 x 2 block.
I did compare geometry ( I guess feature does one by one features in
model). In my case only the geometry changed. But when I use compare
geometry - I get this box that pops up on the top right with random
values and a random tolerance (seemingly random). Not knowing what else
to do - I ok the values and on the top left a black screen comes up and
quickly flashes some info that then disappears. So - I am clueless how
to use this apparently. Help?
