STEP file imported into CREO has errors- can't fix

In the native cad format of the file is without errors in the 3D solid model.  The step file when imported into CREO 2.0 has too many errors to fix.  I've gone thru the Import Data Doctor and have exhausted all options.   The number of incomplete surfaces, features not copied (part is symmetric in original model and 1/2 half was created by a mirror command).  The Step file imports with different feature errors on each side of the model.  The errors are unique to each side, not a mirror of the failed feature/fillet/gap.  I've tried importing it from an IGES format and it doesn't do any better.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Try to import the STEP file back into the originating CAD software and see what it does. The error could be in the export side of the other CAD system.

Here is a story I heard years ago about IGES. CAD system developers were at a demo to show what they had done with the IGES spec and try to import the files into other systems. The surface for the demo was a 3x3 uv grid, so most of the CAD vendors exported a 3x3 grid surface, except 1. That one company exported 9 1x1 surface blocks to give the final 3x3 surface. When asked why they did 1x1, they replied, "Nobody said the surface had to be useful." Since this was before PTC existed it wasn't their programmers, however PTC did buy the company whose programmers did the 1x1 surfaces.

Hello Ben,

Thanks for sharing the story concerning IGES.  I'll ask our vendor to import his file back into his software and see what happens.  Thank You.

I've got a old story to share, (true story)

I was at an engineering seminar, in attendance were two other engineers, one from GM's Pontiac Motor Division. and the other was from Westinghouse Electric's Home Appliance Division.  The Westinghouse engineer was talking and he brought up the fact that Westinghouse was one of the first clothes washing machine manufacturers.  He went on to say that when they were selling back in the 1930's, washing machines cost around $300, and cars were around  $800 -$1000.  He continued to say that today, washing machines are still around $300 and car are $17,000- $25,000 for a four door car.  He told the engineer from GM, "You guys sure haven't done a good job of controlling costs for cars."  The GM engineer gave it some thought, and finally replied: " You were over-priced from the beginning!"

Thanks again, have a nice day!

Sometimes I get better results if I increase the model accuracy before doing the import.

HTH

Or possibly decrease it... there usually seems to be a 'sweet spot' for accuracy.

It's a pain, but just try adjusting the accuracy each way and re-importing to see what happens.  I generally use pseudo-logarithmic steps of 0.002, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 etc to cover the range efficiently.

Thanks Jonathan,

I've got to spend more seat time and give it more attempts, thanks.

Hi JLG,

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a try.

Id like to take a crack at the Data Doctor import on that file.    haven't seen a geometry that I couldn't import yet.  I might have to rebuild a few surfaces here and there as often they can become corrupt.  \
