Skeleton models with imported geometry

I have a large bus model that needs to be used for a skeleton model for an assembly.  I don't need the entire bus structure.  I just need a skeleton of the driver's area.   The model includes numerous components with solids, quilts and surfaces. I am having a great deal of trouble trying to work with the geometry because all the different geometry types.

Here is my method for trying to simplify the geometry.

  1. Load step file as assembly
  2. Create simplified rep with selection box around drivers area and exclude components not in box.
  3. Create an assembly cut of the driver area to create section of the area I am interested in.
  4. Attempt to create shrink wrap.

The problem with this method is that the simplified rep includes large section of structure as a single component and the assembly cut only makes cuts to solid geometry. Quilts and surfaces are left alone.  I have tried to trim back the surfaces however this involves trimming each individual surface that crosses my section that I want removed.  It is very time consuming and I know there must be a better way to trim this geometry to a manageable size.

You may be able to use the import data doctor to cull the imported geometry quickly. Without seeing the data I can not be sure but I have used this in past when the need to filter imported geometry is desired.

If you import it as an assembly you can delete components in the tree if they are not needed. You can drill down to the part and geometry constructs if needed as well. It is worth a try if you just need to eliminate many components quickly. THis will be trivial if the import structure has the area of interest contained within components of the assembly. If you have to filter geometry within components it will take more interaction on your part. Keep in mind that if the source for the STEP data is not static you will have to manually update your import.

This is not very helpful if my client sent over geometry with hundreds or thousands of parts. Rivets, screw, buttons, structural members.  I need to exclude everything, but a small area.  Going to data doctor to delete every component or surface is not easy or helpful.

I need a section or a way to cut the geometry down to a manageable size. Then I can work on eliminating individual components I don't need.

The problem is that if I create a step file of a sectioned model.  It saves the whole underlying model.  If I try to cut the model it only cuts solid components.  If I try to trim surfaces it will only let me trim one component at a time.  😞

Not having access to the data you are wanting to manipulate is not ideal. I get that it  may be proprietary and you can not post it. The selection methods in IDD are the same as those available in Creo Parametric. This would likely allow for filtering geometry by data type and zone of selection. Set up rules for search/selection and exploit the different data types in the imported geometry. Layer , suppress, or delete as required.

If you want to brute force it using features then create an enclosed surface containing what you want and use that construction to create cut(s) to delete all geometry outside of the closed envelope.
