Standard Library Parts

Standard Library Parts

Hi, I've recently had a look at solidworks and noticed they have a library of pre-made fittings etc. I found this very useful. Does Pro/e have anything like this? Is there a library I can download anywhere? I try to use only suppliers who provide this, but some of them don't and drawing up fittings is rather tedious. Thanks

Why is the word F I T T I N G S *beep*'d out? ...anyway all the *beep*'s in my previous post say f i t t i n g s.

Go to the "Order or Download Software Updates" at: http://www.ptc.com/appserver/cs/software_update/swupdate.jsp and choose Pro/ENGINEER from the select products list. You should see down the list: WILDFIRE LIBRARY DATABASES and if you choose "BASIC-zip" this has a library of standard fasteners on it. Alternatively look at other sites such as: http://www.catalogdatasolutions.com/clients.html http://www.mcadcentral.com/proe/files/gallery.asp

Extract the folder and point the config option pro_library_dir to that directory. Then when you go to assemble or open a part, under the folder pulldown you will see Pro/Library as an option.

I don't see this... "and choose Pro/ENGINEER from the select products list. PTC needs to make the site much easier to navigate and find stuff. The search function didn't even turn up anything when I typed in "fasteners" "screws" or a couple other search terms.

Did you click on "Order or Download Software Updates" on the page http://www.ptc.com/appserver/cs/software_update/swupdate.jsp

Sorry, Hadn't had a full cup of coffee yet... Downloading it now.

David: let us know how u make out. I've tried this afew weeks ago, 'was a complete waste of time. Burned up half the A.M. and got nowhere. BTW: I just tried this link, it told me "access denied" when I know our company pays maintenance, etc.

Well, I waited a 1/2 hour for it to download, 1/2 hour sextracting the zip file, then spent another hour trying to figure out where to put the files (kept telling me folder exists, but no Pro-E files exist in it or something), found a folder that it would let me put them in, and then another hour trying to figure out what was what. Then I gave up on it also. The files are too hard to identify, there's no descriptions, and they won't show up in the preview pane. I simply want a family table model of a phillips head machine screw. Solidworks has beutiful libraries full of these nuts, bolts and screws!!! Why does something so simple need to be so hard?!

Thanks for the update, 'doesn't surprise me. Pro/E are experts at making the simple things difficult. So, you wasted 3hrs in the A.M. and got nowhere, I wonder how many screws you could've created in that time, in Family Tables, with the correct mass properties? PTC, Please get your act together!

I've downloaded the "fittings" library but I can't see any of them. Is there any special procedure to use these parts? Thanks in advance

Try setting up a search_path_file in your config.pro

Even without the search path, you ought to be able to navigate to the folder. They DO NOT show up in the preview pane though. so basically, you have to open each file up to find out what they are. Even then, it's hard to tell. I found no slotted or phillips head screws, for example. I'm not sure where the library of bolts and nuts we have now came from. They were here when I started. I know we're constantly adding instances though. I have a feeling we may have made the files ourselves.

Actually I was looking for an answer for the fittings library not the fasteners. Do you need Pro/Piping module to use the fitting library? [/b]

For some reason the F I T T I N G S word is beeped out....

Hey, watch your language! LOL

Maybe it's a bad word in another language?

Forum moderator here... we use a default library for word censoring, since we allow real-time posts and we don't speak every language which may be posted here. The filter that 'fittings' triggered was 'fitt*'. I did some web searches and have no idea why it's on the censor list. Since 'fittings' is obviously related to PTC product lines, I've removed the filter. Sorry for the problem.

No problem... We were just having a little fun with it.

I can't find any documentation on how to configure a library other than the stupid part of installing it into a folder. The help is useless and it seems this forum is as well. PTC employees jumping in about blanked out words? How about answering the question!

It's been a long time since I installed a library. I'm not sure about the fittings library specifically, I've only installed the basic fasteners and human factors libraries. That said, I think you'll need to set the config option 'pro_library_dir' to the main folder where your library is. Assuming that the library has all the *.mnu files, you should then see a Library pick in the folder drop down when you select file open. Now here's the rub. At least as far as fasteners go, the library hasn't been updated in over 10 years as far as I can tell. On top of that, the modeling is sloppy and inconsistent. The bottom line is that hey may not be worth downloading.

You have to set the option Pro_library_ dir to the first directory with a *.mnu file inside. This is the one I am using: pro_library_dir C:\ptc\fittinglib\mechanical\fittinglib. But this in not sufficient because you don't have the search paths. In the library bin directory the file mkfitconfig_nt.bat build them for you. To have the bat works properly you have to launch it from a dos shell setting the ambient variable PRO_LIBRARY_DIR to the installation directory in the example is c:\ptc. This is NOT the proE option; is a windows system variable with the same name needed only for the search paths creation. Now you have a config.pro file in the fittinglib directory with all the search paths.

Yes, it is frustrating that the Pro/Library instances are so unhelpfully named and difficult to use, especially since there is a LOT of good geometry and modelling done within these family tables. An obvious way of helping the situation is to rename things, except for the hours it would take to do this to an entire library. However, since many of us need particular fasteners or components much more frequently than others, renaming selected family table instances can be a useful compromise. For example (if you use a lot of socket head cap screws in your work): open the generic of "csdd" from objlib\eng_part_lib\sock_cp_st_scr. Open the family table and rename CSDD05 (the sub-family of #4 SHCS's) to SHCS_04. Now open that instance, and open its family table. Rename CSDD153 (#4 x .500 SHCS) to SHCS_4_500. Do the same to all necessary instances. (Heaven knows why there is a #4 x 10.000" instance included in the table!!) Close both levels of instances and save the generic. Delete old versions from the library location. Hope this is helpful to someone.
