Which size display do you work on?

I'm surprised I couldn't find a post on this topic already... maybe I just don't know how to search properly.

We are currently looking at changing our monitors and we wanted to know what other ProE users were using. I use a 20in 4:5 CRT (yes, I did say CRT) for my main (where I do all of my modeling).

How about you?

Thanks,

Fred

We use 22" wide screen LCDs, however designers who use other
applications as well as pro/e e.g erp, plm, harnware and checking often
prefer 2x 20" LCDs as the windows can be switched between the monitors
without trying to juggle windows. Twin screens works well if nvidia
nview manager is turned on.

Currently using a Dell 2709W (27") Flat Monitor and an NVIDIA Quadro FX
4500 card at 1920 x 1200.

Fantastic performance, good value.

I must be getting older, just can read the text on the smaller
monitors...

Seriously, go for the largest, high resolution monitor/card combo you
can afford, it is well worth it.

As I suspected, it's all over the place. Latest reply says 2x 30"
wide... WOW!!! What size desk does that guy have?

I personally think that a 16:10 ratio would be better than a 16:9. Would
you agree?

Thanks for your feedback,

Fred

I have a Samsung syncmaster 204b and a Dell 2407WFP running off a Nvidia
Quadro FX3700. I run WF4 on the Dell for modeling and use the smaller
Samsung for "support"; email, spreadsheets, browser... Dual monitors
are a very nice way to get plenty of desktop... and I think it's a nice
bang for the buck ratio too...

I run two Dell 2407WFP's at home... and really don't notice much gain
over the smaller Samsung...

Obviously, MORE, BIGGER is better...

Thanks...

Hopefully, you have a good relationship with IT and can get monitors to
'test'.

AFAIK, a lot of the graphics cards spec'ed for Pro-E also have dual
monitor output, so testing that should not be too much of an ordeal.

BTW, dual screens are great for debugging failed models, etc... Open
two sessions of Pro-E, one in each window.

Open the old model in the one and the failed model in the other and
debug...

It is not always size that matters you really need to find a comfort level.
I work regularly on 2 different systems. Primary work system is a Laptop
17" 1920x1200 display, with a second monitor a low cost dell 24" wide screen
1920x1080 monitor ~$200. Not a more expensive 1920x1200. This combo works
very well for me as it allows me to have high detail on the laptop screen
and then for my 44year old eyes the 24" 1920 x 1080 helps outs by making
things larger. This is a very comfortable proe combination. My home system
which I run proe on is a 30" dell 2560 x 1600 which is fantastic for the
amount of pixels on the screen however I will be adding a second side
monitor as I have grown very use to the dual monitor setup. The dual
monitor setup should be more of a concern than the size and honestly I think
one of the best combinations would be a 24" 1920x1200 paired with a 27-32"
1920x1200. Or 1920x1080 The 30" high rez is great for viewing pictures and
working in minute detail on cad but for all day everyday use it is just too
much to look at and is really more of a toy than anything else. I rarely
find myself using all of my 30" screen unless I am playing a game and there
are very few that let me use the full 2560x1600. (Side note: not every
graphics card can support the 2560x1600 resolution of a 30" monitor, as this
type of monitor requires a dual link connection. The dual link connection
looks like a DVI connector however more wires are used and then you also
need a dual link cable to the monitor. I found this out the hard way, I had
to update my graphics card when I bought this monitor. )

Reliability and Brands are a moot point with me. I have purchased many
monitors from the cheapest off brand I can find to the most expensive and
all have provided great color, brightness and long life. I have yet to have
a single monitor I have purchased go bad. My oldest LCD monitor is about
9-10 years old and still looks as good as my newest 2 month old monitor. So
don't be afraid. I would buy two less expensive monitors per station than
one expensive one. Shop for the best price you can get, look for rebates,
and if buying online, checkout www.retailmenot.com for coupon codes to
further reduce costs or eliminate shipping if you can find a code.

Dual 24" flatscreens...I'm hooked on the duals.

I do a ton of I.D. work from sketches and renderings and I like to have the images on the right screen and Pro running on the left.

Ron,

nice tips / opinion... Thanks for the time in posting.

My setup is very similar w/ Dell's M4300 laptop (1920X1200) and a 23"
(1920x1080) works well.

Especially interesting was the 30" dual link issue.

I am spec'ing a WS right now (we are tied to Lenovo) and I think I am
leaning toward putting all of the budget into the tower and keeping the
old (22" 4:3) monitor for the sake of performance.

Maybe we'll save up for one of Bjarne's 103" models... I am toying with
the idea of staying late one night and setting up out in the lobby - we
just installed a 55" LED (Series 8 Samsung).

On the subject of dual monitors:

Does anyone find WF3 manages Pro/E windows & dual screens better than
WF4?

We use two identical 20" screens and in WF3 most Pro/E pop-ups (datum
feature creation box, mass props, etc) pop up on the 2nd screen just
outside the main Pro/E window, whereas WF4 puts the pop-ups over the
main window obscuring icons etc.

What build? I thought there was a build of 4 that had "issues" with
where the pop-up was. In fact, I think I created an SRP for it... they
resolved it in M110 or was it M100... I'm currently on M110 and have
no issues with where pop-up pop...

Some of this is also how you tell the graphics driver to handle
Windows... which screen you want "windows to use as primary"... My
cube is such that I have the right hand monitor as primary... so Pro/E
opens there and works just as one would expect in terms of popups...

Thanks...
