Wildfire 5.0 enhancement request

Thanks for letting me whine, even though it's only Thursday.

PTC, please, add a Layer button to the right of the "Drawing Tree"
heading.

Clicking on the paper list icon, then clicking Layer Tree is so stupid
when it could be one click right there.

Alternatively, add a Layer tab between the Model Tree and Folder Browser
tab.

One more thing; why is there so much room for the scrolling comments
when the ribbon is only half the width of my screen? The comments could
be in a window/toolbar that can be positioned and sized per user. A
third of my vertical drawing screen is menu. I may as well get a square
monitor again.

Stacy,

I wonder IF PTC is offshoring the design of the software too.

/whine rant

As long as they are at it, make the layer visibility changeable during
part insert into assembly. Quite often parts have layers turned off
that are needed for assembly. I haven't found a way to change the layer
display status in the middle of inserting part in assembly.

Also, make object picking using the tree universal for all actions.

Also, why is it that I can pick 'invisible' edges when creating
attachments for dimensions, notes in drawing mode? Why don't 'real'
edges (shown in white) have pick priority over others?

Also, is there some way to make section views default to View Display |
No-hidden?

As far as the ribbon....

Bad idea, poor implementation. Whatever happened to the object-action
paradigm? When updating/creating a drawing you need to jump from
layout, to annotate, to table, back to annotate, back to layout, etc...

Very annoying...

BTW PTC, your competitors don't make the users jump through so many
hoops. Some of them also use the ribbon interface. I'm just sayin...

/whine rant off

OK, whew, I feel better now.... I've been working on a lot of drawings
lately, can you tell?

I couldn't agree more! This just ticks me off every time I run into it.

As a long time user (since ver. 17 UNIX) I have to say that WF 5.0 has so many things that slow me down, it's unbelievable. The ribbon is one major area that gets me aggravated. WAY TOO MANY extra steps to accomplish seemingly simple tasks. Creating and editing Simplified Reps. seems like a step backwards. No single button to update all sheets in drawing mode.

Many pains... no real gains 😞

Bob

.and while you're assembling a part, why can't you pick features in the
model tree for placement? The part is there on the screen, but its features
are not visible in the tree until you finish placing. Quite often I want to
place by coord sys or default planes, but I have to pick on the screen,
(which means I need to adjust the layers...)

I know this doesn't fix the issue that you all are referring to but I use the search tool when the layers are not what I need them to be. I agree that it would be a great enhancement but until then we have to have a work around and that was it for me......sometimes.

P Before printing, think about the environment.

Yes but PTC gets to claim.... "Our Software is Certified for Microsoft"
Just because it's certified does not mean it's better. I have said it
since rev 17 stop playing with the interface and give me the functionality
that I require to do my job faster not slower. The simple fact is their
are many basic areas that Pro/Engineer needs to be improved.

Hi everyone,

Just a couple of comments on this thread...

Regarding Stacy' original suggestion of pulling the layer button out of
the paper icon menu in Drawing Mode:

I understand the issue and I think we'll keep that in mind as we
consider UI improvements in the next release. In general, we would like
to make the more commonly used tools more prominent and reduce the
number of clicks to get to them. In the meantime, you could consider a
simple customization to your toolbars that would provide the same
benefit you're looking for and even more. That is to add a new toolbar
to the right of the Drawing Tree/Model Tree that contains the commands
to active the Layer tree as well as those for setting visibility state
and saving and resetting of layer status. I find this to be very helpful
and doesn't eat up too much real estate on a widescreen monitor...

Regarding the suggestions about improving layer access and selection of
items while assembling:

We have made a bunch of improvements along these lines in recent
releases, particularly Wildfire 5.0.

In Wildfire 4.0, here are a few things you could do... To pull up the
layer tree while assembling a component, just select on View > Layers
from the top level menus. This should make the layer tree visible, then
you can filter the tree to the component being assembled by either
selecting the component from the pull-down list above the layer tree of
by clicking on the Select icon and picking the component in the graphics
window (easiest way).

In Wildfire 5.0, we've added even more improvements, such as including
the component being assembled in the model tree appearing below the
Insert Here location. You can select references right from the tree.

We've also added something called the docked accessory window which is
an improvement over the old separate window in that it does not keep
falling behind the main window. When you have the accessory window
active, we've also implemented a split model tree that shows the
component being assembled in a separate tree so you can select
references from the tree.

Lastly, I'd like to say thanks for the suggestions. There are quite a
few of us at PTC who monitor the exploder and we often make note of the
questions and suggestions that you users make and we take them into
account as we plan and design new software releases.

Regards,

Raphael

Thanks for the tips. It looks like you have the visibility features on
a left side tool bar, and then you added the layer command to the top of
this.

Using WF5 m040, the visibility toolbar is blank. I will add the
visibility items to this toolbar and dock to the left side.

The layers and selections do work in assembly, thanks for the info.

Another thing I have found that in drawing mode there is a review
command to 'update sheets'. Unfortunately it only updates the current
sheet, unless you <shift>click the tabs for all of the sheets. This is
confusing for us because in WF4 you used to have 'update current sheet'
and 'update all sheets'.

Upon opening a drawing it is not clear whether a drawing sheet/views
needs update or not so our default action is to update all sheets before
printing.
