translating an assembly to a part...

I have an assembly that I wish to basically convert into a part. This is essentially a "purchased" part, "black box" to me. In the past, for smaller, simplerassemblies, I would simply merge allthe parts of the assembly, then step that out and back into a part. In this case, the assembly is complex, and merging parts has proved difficult if not impossible (the usual problem with accuracies and overlapping geometry...). I thought in the past I was able to translate out to a single part, but cannot remember the method.

thanks in advance....

Paul,

Have you tried a shrinkwrap? Use Merged Solids and quality 10...

You can also save down to a Parasolid and either upon re-opening that file in Pro or saving it, it gives you the option for it to be a part instead of an assembly.

You can save as an .igs and open as a part. For models with a ton of features, simplify the part first, it will reduce the file size. Also, if you can, use surfaces instead of solid.

I would keep the quality at 1 and explicitly select the parts to include in the merged shrinkwrap from the dialog. The find tool can be used to include all parts if needed. You can also select datum features to include too.
