Print Preview

Some users have requested the ability to have the output of print
preview display the page the cursor is located in Editor. So if the
user does the print preview with their cursor in the middle of the
document, the print preview window will display the entire document but
automatically be scrolled down to show the same area the cursor is in.
In the documentation I found only one reference to any ability to do
this. The help page for the preview command (help 9023) has a note that
seems to indicate that the default behavior is what I'm looking for.
Trying it on my machine, the print preview window always shows the last
page. Is what the users want the default behavior? If not, is there a
way to force it to display the cursor page? If it is the default, any
ideas why it isn't working on my machine (nor apparently the users'
machines)?

I also found that there are menu options on the print preview window to
"Synchronize Editor Position", which is supposed to show in Editor the
location shown in the preview window. The popup menu for this is
greyed-out, and using the menu bar item results in a status bar message
stating "Cannot synchronize; center of view is outside any page
boundary". But the print preview window is showing a full page of normal
text output when I try to do this. Any ideas why this isn't working for me?

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,

See Help 9023 (the magic is in "auto" option):
"If the document is up to date with regard to formatting,
then preview auto will cause Arbortext Editor to position
the Print Preview window to the page containing the cursor."

Entering "pre allpasses auto" on the command line causes the document to
format. Repeating the command immediately (press cursor up and press
enter) causes the page to change to the preview page where the cursor
is.

I think Arbortext is removing this capability in version 5.4, so there
is probably no point in getting used to it.

Brian, I didn't see the second part until I had already pressed "send".

"Cannot synchronize; center of view is outside any page
boundary". But the print preview window is showing a
full page of normal text output when I try to do this.

I have found that if I make sure that the entire page shows in the
preview window (without a large margin around the document) the
synchronize view will work (most of the time - not 100%).

Does anyone recall (if it is possible) how to set the default print preview to be 100%. Each time I preview a file, it opens up at 120%.

I thought it would be somewhere in the pubview.cf file, but I can't find it. I found the setting to allow me to scroll all the time, but none of the other settings seem to work for the preview percentage.

Thanks

Lynn

Hi Lynn--

There's a setting in there (magbase) that's supposed to do this, but it's broken due to a bug. The corresponding SPR is SPR 1424090. It still seems to be open, despite having been initally reported in 2007, so it's hard to say how soon it might get fixed....

Clay,

Thanks that is what I thought should have done it. Nice to know I haven't totally forgotten everything I knew about Epic. 😄

Sounds familiar. I found this in my notes. It reads like it is talking about the screen editor, but I think it means the print preview window:

#
# pubview.cf
#
# magbase [number | auto]
# Determines the initial font magnification used when starting Arbortext Editor.
# For example, 1000 has Arbortext display everything at full page size;
# 500 displays at half size; auto adjusts the magnification so the entire page is
# visible on the screen. The default is magbase 1000. Magbase 1200 makes it display
# at 120%
# Changed magbase to 1200 - AWE 7/24/2008
# Changed magbase to 1100 - AWE 5/7/2010 (new monitor can't show 1600 x 1200 resolution)

Andy,

That's what I thought would do it, but Clay says it is a 'reported bug' and it isn't working.

Thanks.
