datamerge: data typing problem AND can you return markup? my < are coming in as <

Has anyone tried / succeeded returning XML markup from a datamerge? My < are
being converted to < in the resulting markup.

Data source is Excel.
QueryType=Freeform

I also noticed that the data type determination appears faulty. If I have
the following data in a column:
512 MB
1 GB
12

The 12 is not returned. If all rows in the column are numeric, the 12 is
returned. Setting the Excel cells to Text (instead of General) has no
impact.

FWIW: My < are being converted to < when using a SQL Server as the data
source, too.
