Calculation times with shells (middlesurfaces) vs solids

While working on a stress model in Creo, I have noticed that doing an analysis without middlesurfaces takes significantly less time than an analysis with middlesurfaces.

The model essentially a truss system where the beams are c-beams made from sheetmetal, so I have been using middlesurfaces while I ensure that the model is meshing properly and when doing a quick check analysis to see if I got the proper reaction loads at my constraints since middlesurfaces should reduce the solver time.

What I've noticed is that, when doing a quick check with middlesurfaces, the solver will take about 12 minutes to give results. However, when I remove the middlesurfaces and mesh the model with solids and then run a single-pass adaptive analysis, it will take a little over 2 minutes. Why is this?
