All of the entities and data in storage entities(Stream, ValueStream, DataTable, Wiki, Blog) are kept in Persistence Provider, to enhance the storage volume of Thingworx, it is advised to use bigger Persistence Provider (PostgreSQL or Cassandra rather than Neo4j and H2), move and keep certain part of data in external database or set up a second Persistence Provider Data Storage entities (Stream, ValueStream, DataTable) and Collaboration entities (Wiki, Blog) can be assigned to the new Persistence Provider to keep the Business Data The original Persistence Provider (upon installation) will be freed from large data input and respond faster, and only holds the Model Data (entity information) Small Persistence Provider like H2 or Neo4j, which does not require extra steps to setup in the Thingworx installation process, cannot set up a second Persistence Provider (they don't have .bat files to configure the database) Here is an example for setting up a second PostgreSQL (may also applicable for Cassandra) Install a new PostgreSQL in the server Should give different folder names for the files, or two PostgreSQL will affect each other PostgreSQL 9.5 could work with Thingworx 7.2.x, but cannot be used with 7.3 and above. Version 9.5 is not officially supported or advised by now, and the user should take their own risk if doing so. The new PostgreSQL will have a new port number (e.g. first port is 5432, the new port is 5433) Open PostgreSQL using pgAdmin 3 Create a new user role: a. Right click PostgreSQL9.4 (localhost:5433). b. Select NewObject>New Login Role. On the Properties tab, in the Role name field, enter the user role name. c. On the Definition tab, in the Password field, enter a unique password (you will be prompted to enter it twice). Add the new <postgres-installation>/bin folder to system path variable Edit the thingworxPostgresDBSetup.bat and thingworxPostgresSchemaSetup.bat from the Thingworx software download package, and change the port property to 5433 Execute the two scripts, and new database and tablesapce will be created platform-settings.json file does not need extra configuration Restart the Tomcat server, a new folder will be created under ThingworxPostgresqlStorage folder Go to Thingworx composer, create a new Persistence Provider in the Home list Give it a new name, and select Persistence Provider Package(only one choice) After selection, a Configuration field will show up in the ENTITY INFORMATION field ( such field will not appear in Neo4j based Thingworx) Open Configuration and change the JDBC URL to jdbc:postgresql://localhost:5433/thingworx, update Password, click Save The new Persistence Provider can be used in data storage entities now The new Persistence Provider can also be set as default provider

Contents: Introduction Prerequisites Installing Java Installing PostgreSQL Running the Installer Post Installation Steps Troubleshooting tips   Introduction:   Starting with ThingWorx 8.4, PTC released a new way to install a fresh ThingWorx environment.  This installer takes care of all the permissions, database scripts, credential encryption, and tomcat options that previously needed to be done manually.  More information on the installer can be found in the ThingWorx Help Center   NOTE: This is different than the Docker installer we have available in earlier releases.   As of right now, the installation guide has very basic instructions for the installer.  The purpose of this post is to show you from start to finish what the process looks like.  For this example, I chose to deploy PostgreSQL 10 on the local system to keep things simple.   Prerequisites:   Download the latest Java 8 SE JDK RPM for RHEL Get your database ready: If you're accessing a remote PostgreSQL instance, make sure PSQL is installed and working on your ThingWorx Server Download the appropriate installer from support.ptc.com Ensure the RHEL user that will be executing the installer has SUDO privileges   NOTE: There are pieces of the manual installation guide that I had to reference in order to get JAVA and PostgreSQL properly configured.   Installing Java:   Per Page 83, I downloaded the latest Linux x64 RPM for Java 8 SE JDK (201) and followed steps 2-8 to configure Java. For step 5, I needed to use the -f parameter listed in the guide under NOTE Step 7 make sure you don't accidentally select OpenJDK if it was preinstalled   Installing PostgreSQL:   I'm following along with the Version 10 download instructions found on https://www.postgresql.org/download/linux/redhat/ NOTE: this needs root access, so run all the commands with SUDO Install the client packages Postgresql10 I will Install the optional server packages postgresql10-server since this is a local PostgreSQL instance Complete step 7 to enable automatic start.  We need to set the postgres password so our ThingWorx installer is able to create our thingworx user and the database.  This can be done with the following command: NOTE: Since this is the master user for your database, it is highly recommended to use a password that has a combination of case, numbers, letters, and symbols Sudo passwd postgres Although, this may be redundant, I also run the following command to update the password used in PostgreSQL : sudo -u postgres psql -c "ALTER ROLE postgres WITH password '<password from above>'" Navigate to /var/lib/pgsql/10/data and open pg_hba.conf for editing Review page 91 of the Installation guide to determine which setting best applies to your business needs In the same directory open postgresql.conf Scroll down to "listen_addresses" line and un-comment it.  This would  be the place to make changes if you expect remote connections to access the database.  If it is local, then the default of localhost is fine Restart PostgreSQL to apply these changes: Sudo service postgresql-10 restart   Running the Installer:   Everything should be in place now to run our installer.  Extract the ThingWorxFoundationPostgres-1.2.0-SNAPSHOT.run file to the ~ (home) directory Execute the .run file: NOTE: If it doesn't let you execute the file, it may not have extracted as an executable.  Run the below command to make it executable then try again: Chmod -x ThingWorxFoundationPostgres-1.2.0-SNAPSHOT.run Sudo ./ThingWorxFoundationPostgres-1.2.0-SNAPSHOT.run   At this point you'll be going through text to setup your installation settings.  I'll briefly list out the order you'll see them below: Terms and conditions and whether you agree Where you want ThingWorx deployed (/opt by default) NOTE: this folder will contain ThingworxStorage/ ThingworxPlatform/ tomcat/ etc… Installation Configuration user (twxfoundation by default).  This step creates a user in RHEL that will have ownership of Tomcat, various ThingWorx directory's, etc ThingWorx Administrator Password.  Used to login to ThingWorx Composer. WRITE THIS DOWN SOMEWHERE!  You cannot retrieve this password, and most likely will require you to do a fresh installation if you forget it Tomcat Port http (8080) Tomcat SSL port (8443) Use SSL For simplicity, I chose not to use it for this exercise PostgreSQL information Host Name : mine is local, so localhost Port (5432) Administrator Username (Administrator) : use postgres here, since that's the DB user password we updated above Admin password : use the postgres password ThingWorx Database login username (twadmin).  This user will be created in PostgreSQL and be tied to our ThingWorx database ThingWorx database login password: NOTE There's no place to re-enter your password, so make sure you write this down.   Unexpected issue:   For this particular install, I kept running into a failure saying "Warning: Failed to validate the PostgreSQL connection.  Check the information you entered".  I opened another putty connection and, as root, navigated to /var/lib/pgsql/10/data/log and opened the postgresql log to find the following:   2019-02-28 17:10:30.678 UTC [93377] LOG:  could not connect to Ident server at address "::1", port 113: Connection refused 2019-02-28 17:10:30.678 UTC [93377] FATAL:  Ident authentication failed for user "postgres" 2019-02-28 17:10:30.678 UTC [93377] DETAIL:  Connection matched pg_hba.conf line 84: "host    all             all             ::1/128                 ident"     The solution for me was to go into the pg_hba.conf and change the IPv6 local connections from ident to md5.  Again, make sure you are reading through the PostgreSQL documentation and adjusting these properties in a way that meets both your security and business needs.   Once the change was made, I restarted postgresql, and switched back over to my Putty instance that had the installer going.     A summary pops up for a few items, and then it asks if you're ready to continue NOTE: The progress bar goes to 100% pretty quickly, and doesn't appear to move.  Just let it sit for a few minutes while it finishes up Copy the Thingworx Device ID for future reference To check if ThingWorx is running, run 'sudo service Thingworx-Foundation status' in your command line If it is active (running) try to access it with a remote browser: More information around the command Firewalld can be found here  http://<thingworxurl>:<tomcatport>/Thingworx NOTE: If it just hangs, check your firewall to make sure the port is open for external communication   Post Installation Steps:   Licensing: Navigate to /opt/ThingWorxPostgres-1.2.0-SNAPSHOT/licensingconfigurator and run the twx-licensing-configurator.run as SUDO Choose whether or not you want PTC to store your credentials and download the license for you, or if you want to manually download the license yourself from http://support.ptc.com -> Manage Licenses (bottom right) For this example, I manually downloaded the license Move the license file over to the ThingWorx Server Since you're running the licensingconfigurator as SUDO, don't put this file into your user's home directory.  Instead, put it into /tmp NOTE: Change the downloaded filename to license_capability_response.bin.  Otherwise the file will not be recognized Then it will ask for your ThingWorx Administrator password This appears to be used for verification after the license is in place, and it sees if it can successfully log into your system Once it has completed, and assuming it says "Setup has finished configuration licensing for ThingWorx", open up a web browser and login as Administrator -> Monitor -> Subsystems -> Licensing Subsystem and verify that your licensing information looks correct on the system   Extensions: Extra security has been added as of 8.4 around importing Extensions.  More details can be found in the Help Center In short, adding extensions is disabled by default, and you need to add some lines into your /ThingworxPlatform/platform-settings.json under the "PlatformSettingsConfig" section. In the 8.2 release, we have upgraded our Mashup Runtime to jQuery 3.2.  This will give the platform a much needed upgrade to its core visualization library which will bring bug fixes, better performance, security enhancements, HTML5 compatibility and support for current browsers.  We will continue to upgrade all of our libraries across the platform with each ThingWorx release to ensure we are current and optimized.   We are releasing this functionality in 8.2 as an early preview and to enable regression testing of your ThingWorx applications.  In the Next Gen Composer, simply click on User Preferences and look for this setting:     Enabling jQuery3 runtime   JQuery 3 does introduce some new breaking changes (not from PTC!) that may affect existing apps.  We recommend turning on the JQuery3 option and testing your apps as soon as possible so there is time to fix any issues.  Please let PTC know if you are finding issues through our support site and our support staff will coach you through the upgrade process.  In 8.3, the jQuery 3 library will be our default for the Mashup design and runtime.  This means you will need to address any compatibly issues that jQuery 3 introduces (if any) to your widgets/applications before upgrading to the 8.4 release, where jQuery 3 will be the only available option.  We are hoping this dual mode, early access will help everyone through the transition and produce the best IoT applications possible!   You can also use the guides here for your reference: https://jquery.com/upgrade-guide/3.0/ https://github.com/jquery/jquery-migrate#migrate-older-jquery-code-to-jquery-30 https://blog.jquery.com/2017/03/16/jquery-3-2-0-is-out/

The use of the term “SSO” means different things to different people. Among Navigate Admins, it became shorthand for using PingFederate to provide both authentication with a single sign-on component, as well as authorization (checking permissions for access to files). In Navigate 1.5, this was the only option for configuring a production system, and many people were not ready for it. That was the origin of the “must have SSO” statement. Beginning with Navigate 1.6, PTC added a scenario called “Windchill Authentication”, that is suitable for Production and uses your Enterprise LDAP to authenticate users. It will issue a token so you get some of the benefits of single sign-on, but not all the bells and whistles that come with PingFederate. It’s also easier to configure. People have begun referring to Windchill Authentication as “non-SSO”, to distinguish it from PingFederate, even though Windchill Authentication has some SSO functions.   In the install manual, there are three scenarios: Fixed Authentication, Windchill Authentication, and Single Sign-On with PingFederate. People usually begin with Fixed Authentication (the easiest to configure, but not secure so it’s only good for Proof of Concept demonstrations), then do Windchill Authentication before tackling PingFederate. Windchill Authentication can take a couple of days while Webexing with us to get working, but for PingFederate we plan several Webexes over a period of 8 days for a typical install. During that time you will be coordinating with other administrators (such as the AD admin) and waiting for emails etc. to get remote admin tasks done as part of the install. Be prepared, timewise.

Having trouble remembering how to get into Flow? How about make /Flow the URL?   Since the Flow environment uses NGINX to front-end the various components that make up Flow, there is a very sophisticated set of rewrites and proxy_pass directives in the NGINX configuration. All you have to do is add another 'location' fragment to the vhost-flow.conf file that will push /Flow over to /Thingworx/Composer/apps/flow:       location /Flow {       rewrite ^/Flow$ $proxy_scheme://$server_host/Thingworx/Composer/apps/flow permanent;     }   On Linux, the file should be at /etc/nginx/conf.d/vhost-flow.conf   On Windows, the file should be at c:\Program Files\nginx-[version]\conf\conf.d\vhost-flow.conf   Test the updated config file with (nginx may not exist in your normal path): nginx -t   Restart the NGINX service: Linux (one of these will work depending upon your Linux version): systemctl restart nginx service nginx restart Windows: Net stop ThingWorxOrchestrationNginx Net start ThingWorxOrchestrationNginx -or- use the Services app to restart the service   From this point forward https://yourserver/Flow will take you to ThingWorx Flow's home page.

If the ThingWorx 7.4 installation with MSSQL db doesn't start with a license error on the splash screen, despite taking the necessary steps for specifying the license path, the error might be misleading and the problem is actually lying in the database connection. First, how the database was set up. The standard expected port if 1433, however, if you choose a different port - ensure that the port is available. If it isn't - update the port setting in SQL configuration manager. Another possible root cause -- the database scripts did not run properly upon the setup. Currently, there is an active Jira PSPT-3587 for resolving the script issue (NOTE, this thread to be updated once the Jira is fixed). There are two options here, either to run the sql files manually (found in the "install" folder of the downloadable), or edit the bat scripts manually. It's recommended to edit the script files instead because running the sql commands allows more room for a mistake. The following line in the bat scripts needs to be edited to have the ".\" removed: sqlcmd.exe -S %server%\%serverinstance%,%port% -U %adminusername% -v loginname=%loginname% -v database=%database% -v thingworxusername=%thingworxusername% -v schema=%schema%  -i .\thingworx-database-setup.sql Note, that the scripts need to be run from the same directory ("/install")

Here are some tips on how to submit a ticket to the ThingWorx technical support team and what to expect. Providing a typical minimum information is always a good practice to lessen the questions and unnecessary back-and-forth communication prior to the actual investigation of the problem. Open a new ticket for each separate issue. We do track every technical issue that comes in. If the ticket is being submitted for troubleshooting: Please provide the versions of Thingworx, Tomcat, java; Operating System and specs. Attach the list of the extensions used. Include a detailed description of the problem; if applicable, include the screenshots. Evaluate the business impact caused by the issue. Optional: state the method of contact preference, whether it's a phone or email, and time if applicable. Expect a support engineer (SE) to establish the first contact via email, letting known of the case ownership, and further investigation. If the ticket is being submitted for enhancement request or improvement: Please provide a clear description of the feature, use case(s), expectations and any additional details that might play a role in prioritizing the request. Once the ticket has been created, it will be assigned to a support engineer (SE) who will then place a request (Jira) to R&D and provide a Jira # to the point of contact in the support ticket Enhancement requests and improvements are always considered; however, the delivery is not guaranteed. Once an SE provides the case contact with the Jira #, the support ticket will be closed, and the point of contact may reach out to the SE at any time to check on the status of the Jira. If the ticket is being submitted for a bug or a defect: Please provide the versions of Thingworx, Tomcat, java; Operating System and specs. Include a clear description of the problem, expected result, current result; a Evaluate the business impact. If reproducible, include the steps. Optional: include the entities and data (.xml, .json if applicable) to demonstrate the issue Once the ticket has been created, it will be assigned to a support engineer (SE) who will then place a request (Jira) to R&D and provide a Jira # to the point of contact in the support ticket (assuming no further information is required) The R&D will provide an estimate release after the issue is evaluated. Upon sending the ETA to the case contact, the SE will close the support ticket.

The following feature enhancements and bug fixes exist in ThingWorx 8.1.0: Enhancements Platform: • Metrics Reporting is enabled by default, which allows usage, performance, and diagnostics data to be sent to a PTC server daily. For more information about this setting, see Platform Subsystem. • You can add and configure Notifications in New Composer. Hi,   If you need to change the used hostname at installation of Thingworx Flow, some manual changes should be done without re-installing Flow. Basically, hostname for Flow should be changed in the nginx configuration and in Flow modules configuration; whenever you see the hostname used at Flow installation, change it with the new hostname.   Change the following configurations after renaming the ThingWorx Flow server in Windows OS : 1. Stop Flow, Nginx and ThingWorx Tomcat services 2. Update C:\Program Files\ <nginx>\conf\conf.d\vhost-flow.conf server_name : change hostname with new one      3. Update C:\Program Files (x86)\ <ThingWorxFlow>\modules\lookup\deploymentConfig.json ENDPOINT : change hostname with new one      4. Update <ThingWorxFlow>\modules\oauth\deploymentConfig.json UI_ENDPOINT : change hostname with new one ENDPOINT : change hostname with new one      5. Update <ThingWorxFlow>\modules\trigger\deploymentConfig.json DOMAIN : change hostname with new one TRIGGER_HOST : change hostname with new one 6. This is a reference document on how to move existing or fresh install ThingworxStorage location. Note: As of Thingworx 7.0 the platform-settings.json file has changed and therefore the newest version needs to be used  to change the location of the folders. Please refer to this guide pg.45-46 to see the new .json file.http://support.ptc.com/WCMS/files/170230/en/Installing_ThingWorx_7.1.pdf  A sample json is attached at the bottom of this document. Here are the main bullet points that need to be kept in mind when performing a migration process: ThingworxPlatform directory has to be in the same partition as where the Tomcat is installed. I.e. if your tomcat is in /apps, the ThingworxPlatform should also be in /apps, not in root. Note: if ThingworxPlatform will be placed in a different partition than the tomcat, create a THINGWORX_PLATFORM_SETTINGS environmental variable that will point to the correct location. Refer to the Installation Guide for details. Before modifying the location of the platform-settings.json, stop tomcat. There is no need to undeploy the Thingworx app, but do rename the existing folders (as a way of copying/preserving data if any exists) “ThingworxStorage” to “ThingworxStorageCopy” and “ThingworxBackupStorage” to “ThingworxBackupStorageCopy”. If this is a fresh install, proceed to step 3.. Modify the platform-settings.json to have desired locations for the ThingworxStorage folders. Start the tomcat. New ThingworxStorage and ThingworxBackupStorage will be created in the new location. Note: if there is any data in the ThingworxStorage (see ThingworxStorageCopy and ThingworxBackupStorageCopy from step 2), stop the tomcat and place the contents of the original folders into the new ones or just replace the directories. For Postgresql  scenarios: Ensure postgresql database is running. If fresh install/no need to preserve data,  and in case of 401 error, clean the existing database via the script and run the two scripts to install and setup DB and Schema. Start tomcat and verify connection. If data does need to be preserved, then run the schema update script to update from 6.5 to 6.6. then to 7.0 and 7.1 respectively, depending on which version you are starting with. To change the location of where postgresql would write data, find the thingworxPostgresDBSetup.sh script open it to edit: tablespace_location="/ThingworxPostgresqlStorage" Then re-run the DBsetup and Schema setup while tomcat is stopped.
